SIXTH YEAR; 1994

Cedric stole a glance at y/n, who was helping a second year with his transfiguration homework.

"Oi, Cedric," said one of his friends. "Quit ogling at her and ask her out, already."

Cedric's face turned crimson after that. He ducked his head down, attempting to laugh it off while concealing just how dark his blush really was.

"What'd you mean?" His friend only smirked.

"Oh, come on, Ced. It's obvious you fancy her," he said, and Cedric gulped nervously. "I mean, I can't blame you. But still — ask her out, before someone else does, you pansy!"

Cedric's brow only furrowed — why  would someone as perfect as her, like someone like himself, like that? But something that the Hufflepuff didn't notice, was that y/n's e/c eyes were trained on him.

"Listen up," said Professor Sprout to the Hufflepuffs. "We've got the yule ball coming up — which is a dance that is associated with, as you know, the triwizard tournament!"

The girls in the greenhouse whispered excitedly among themselves, often glancing at the boys, giggling escaping their lips. Many of them looked at Cedric.

"It'll take place on Christmas night, from eight until midnight. Dress robes should be worn— hair can be worn down — and it is strictly for fourth years and above — but a younger student can attend if they are invited.

But just because this night is for socialising and getting to know our foreign guests, does not — in any way — mean that your behaviour standards can drop in the slightest!"

Professor Sprout may have said something more, but Cedric didn't hear, as he watched y/n trot up the grassy hill with her h/c hair flying behind her in the breeze. She seemed to be coming back from the gamekeeper's hut.

Y/n slowed as she reached the greenhouses, peering into each one until she spotted the professor. Then, she leant against the door as the bell rung.

"Diggory," Professor Sprout boomed over the chatter, "a word privately, please!"

Once the greenhouse had cleared, Cedric and the professor were the only two left in the greenhouse (which was overflowing with vibrant, exotic-looking plants and shrubs.)

And, there was y/n.

"One moment, y/n," said Sprout. "Diggory, the champions are to open the dance with their partners. Thought I'd just warn you — you need a dance partner, or you'll look like a fool dancing all by yourself."

The lady grinned in a motherly way, before sending him off to lunch. cedric's heart did a feeble sort of squeeze when y/n smiled as he passed her, their fingers brushing briefly.

"Y/n, what is it you need?"

"Rubeus just needed some more of that flesh-eating slug repellent — they're all over his garden."

"Okay, i'll get it to him. You run along now," said Professor Sprout.

Y/n strode out of the greenhouse and saw Cedric making his way up to the castle. She jogged over to him.

"How're you doing?" she asked him. Cedric raised an eyebrow at her, she shrugged. "It's polite to ask, is it not?"

"I'm... alright," Cedric sighed. "You?" he asked, wanting to listen to her voice.

"Hangin' in there," y/n said, biting the inside of her cheek. "Just wish I could sleep in, sometimes."

"Don't we all?" her melodic laughter filled Cedric's ear shortly after. The two continued to walk up towards the castle together, both lost in their own thoughts.
