One Step Forward, Five Steps Back

I wish I could say that I fell down the rabbit hole,

Past the cake to eat, and the potion to drink.

Lost myself in the world of wonder, and talking flowers.

But I didn't fall fast, instead it was,

One step forward, five steps back.

Everyone had their puzzle to fit in,

I was the piece dropped on the floor,

The one that gathered dust in the crack on the ground.

I wanted a page to read from, a place to sit.

I wanted to be an Alice, in my own little land.

All I wanted was to feel like I belonged,

Was it so wrong to need a place to be.

I wanted a wonderland to fall into.

I needed a white rabbit to show me the way.

But instead of a fast fall down a rabbit hole,

I got a long walk, one step forward, and five steps back.
