The next morning, I sat silently at the kitchen table, slowly sipping my thermos of blood, and stared at the wall, concentrating hard on what I could possibly tell El to make her understand that we had to break up without hurting her. Will had gone to Mike's already, and Johnathan was at work with Nancy at The Hawkins Post, which left me alone with my thoughts and Mom. I jumped, torn from my thoughts by the phone ringing shrilly, and stood up, going over to answer it. I picked it up nervously, and sighed, before asking, "Hello?" El replied, "It's nine thirty two..Where are you?" I swallowed hard, and said, "Sorry, I-I was just about to call. I, um..I can't see you today." She asked, "Why not?" I knew it was a stupid thing to do, but rather than telling her the truth and either getting shot by Hopper or hurting her, I lied. "It's my room..It's a wreck..Almost everything is gone."

El said, "But..Hop said that your room is fine..That it was a false alarm." I closed my eyes, resisting the urge to pound my head against the wall, and said, "Yeah..That's what we thought it was at first, but now, we've found other things missing that are important." She said in a suspicious tone, "Oh." I continued,"Yeah..We think we might have to fix everything on the house..It's pretty wrecked." I heard my Mom's voice on the extension, "WHAT??" I covered the mouthpiece with one hand, and yelled, "MOM! GET OFF THE PHONE! HOW MANY TIMES?" Mom asked in worry, her voice loud, "Did someone break in?!" I shouted back, "NO! JUST. GET. OFF. THE. PHONE!" I waited until I was sure she'd hung up, before sighing, and bringing the phone back up to my ear. "Sorry about that." El asked, "Was that your Mom?" I laughed nervously, and replied, "Yeah..She's so upset, she's making no sense. We have to go to the police station and file a report." She asked in confusion, "You can come over after?" I kind of yelled, "NO! I..I just mean- I think I need to be alone today..With my..Feelings?" El asked, "Do you lie?" I nervously said, "What?? No! Friends don't lie." I lowered the phone, not hearing Mom in the house, and yelled,"What, Mom?" I quickly lifted the phone back up to my ear, and said, "My Mom's calling me, I gotta go. Talk to you tomorrow, miss you already, BYE!" I slammed the phone down on the receiver, and took a deep breath, feeling horrible and hurt, really missing El..That hadn't been a lie.

I covered my face with my hands, and shouted, "FUCK!" I winced, as a few of Mom's plates shattered, and whispered, "Oops..Mom's gonna kill me. I need to talk to the boys about El, and see if they have any ideas about how the hell I can fix this mess..Damn Hopper.." I stormed into my room, and pulled on my leather jacket that El gave me six months ago the night we closed the Gate, then grabbed all the money off my dresser, shoving it into my pockets. I walked out the front door, and grabbed my bike, hopping on it, then started pedaling through town towards the Wheelers'. I hopped off my bike, as I reached the front door, then tried ringing the doorbell. No one answered, and I looked around to make sure no one was watching, before concentrating on the door. I heard the locks click open, and the door swung inwards, letting me inside. I wiped my bleeding nose with the back of my hand, and called, "Mike? Will?? Lucas? Hello?" Mike shouted up the basement stairs, "Down here, Sarah!" I sighed in relief, and jerked my head a bit, the front door shutting and locking, as I made my way down to the basement. Mike and Lucas looked at me from the couch, and Will looked up from the D&D board he was setting up with playing pieces. For the first time in awhile, he talked to me, and asked, "What's wrong? You look..Upset." I sighed, shoving Mike off the couch, and plopped next to Lucas, telling them everything about Hopper, me, and El. Mike's eyes widened, and he said, "Oh, shit..That's so messed up." Lucas sighed, and shook his head, and Will stayed silent. Too nervous to stay sitting, I shot up, and started pacing back and forth across the floor.

"She knows that I'm lying! She knows I'm lying!" Lucas said, "I don't even understand. Why lie?" I replied, anger underlying my voice, "Hopper! He-He threatened me!" Lucas asked, "Did he say he'd kill you?" I whirled around, frowning. "What?! No!" He sighed, and asked, "Then what's the big deal??" I said, "The big deal is, if I don't do what he says, then he'll stop me from seeing El..Like, permanently! And he said girls shouldn't kiss or date other girls! I have to do what he wants!" Lucas rubbed his face, and asked, "You have superpowers, right? Why the hell are you even scared of him?" I replied, "You don't understand, Lucas! He's crazy! He's lost his mind!" Will called from the table, "Hey, guys, I'm almost set up here." I got in Lucas' face, and said, "I had no choice, Lucas! I really had no choice!" He said, "I just wish you consulted me, because the way you handled this? You're in deep shit!" I got more and more nervous, and Mike said, "Sarah, calm down..My Mom already had to replace the bookshelf twice down here, and she won't be happy about a third time. Plus, I'm running out of excuses about how the hell things keep breaking or falling." I felt my teeth grow longer, and growled, knowing he was right, then started pacing again.
