Chapter Eight:The Mind Flayer

I saw Mike and Bob race into the room, and Mom asked,"What's going on?" Mike said,"We're under attack." Mike walked over to a rolling table, and grabbed a needle. He said,"We need to make Will and Sarah sleep." Mom asked,"What?" I said,"No.." Mike said,"They're spies! If they know where we are, so does the Shadow Monster!" I concentrated on the needle, and it went flying into my hand...Mike's eyes widened, and I whispered,"Let me help...He hasn't gotten me yet..." Will shouted,"He's lying!" Mike said,"He killed the soldiers, and he'll kill us too!" I slowly stood, gritting my teeth, and Will shouted,"He's lying! He's lying! He's lying!" I walked over to him, and said,"You're not my brother in there...I know what you are...And you're trying so hard to get me, too...But let me tell you something, I tried to kill myself to save my friends before..And if I have to die to save my brother, or even let you kill me, I'll do it, you shadowy bastard..." Will continued,"He's lying! He's lying!" Mom looked at him, and said,"Will, listen. Do you know who I am?" Gunfire sounded, and Mom asked again,"Do you know who I am?" Will froze for a minute, and said,"You're...You're...You're Mom." Mom swallowed hard, and said,"Hold him down." Bob did, and Will screamed,"No, no! Let me go! Let me go!"

Mom looked at me, and took the needle from my hand. As the Shadow Monster roared in anger in my head, I flinched, and Mom asked,"Are you...Are you sure you can so this, Sarah?" I said,"I don't know...But if I lose control, knock me out with one of those needles...I mean it..." She nodded, and walked over to Will, and rolled his sleeve up. He continued shouting to let him go, and Mom said,"I'm so sorry." Mike covered his ears, fear in his eyes, as Mom slid the needle into Will's skin. Owens and Hopper came inside, as Will calmed down, and fell asleep, and banging sounded on the hall doors, then wood cracked...Hopper said,"We gotta go, now!" Hopper lifted Will up, and we raced out the door...I was barely able to keep up, breathing hard, and we whirled around to see a monster take down a guard. Hopper raced into a room next to us, and said,"This way!" Mom whimpered, and Bob said,"Oh my God." We looked at the video cameras, and saw monsters everywhere...I looked at Mom, and said,"Let me out..." She asked,"What?! Are you crazy, Sarah?!" I said,"Trust me." Just then, the lights went out, and Bob said,"Oh my God." I said,"You should have let me out...Now they cut the power..."

Owens took a map of the lab, and used a pen to mark two spots."This is us..And this, is the closest exit. But even if we make it there, there's no way out." Hopper asked,"What do you mean?" Owens said,"The locks are fail secure." Mom asked,"Fail secure?" Owens said,"If there's a power outage, the building goes on lockdown." I knew they'd probably learned from when El got out, and sighed. I sat down, and closed my eyes, thinking about El...I whispered,"We really need you, El..." I was surprised when I found myself in darkness, and saw El on a bus...I walked towards her, tears in my eyes, and whispered,"I doubt you can hear me...But I love the new look...And I miss you...We all do.." Her head shot up, and she looked straight at me...Then she asked,"Sarah?" I opened my eyes, blood dripping from my nose, and knew that at least El was safe somewhere away from here... Mom asked Owens,"Can they be unlocked remotely?" Owens said,"With a computer, sure, but somebody's gotta reset the breakers." Hopper asked,"Where are the breakers?" Owens said,"In the basement, three floors down." Hopper began walking away, and Bob asked,"Hey, where are you going?" Hopper answered,"To reset the breakers." Bob asked,"Then what?" Hopper answered,"Then we get out of here." Bob said,"No, then the power comes back on. If you wanna unlock the doors, you have to reboot the computer systems, and then override the security codes with a manual input." Hopper said,"Fine, how do I do that?" Bob said,"You can't. Unless you know BASIC." Hopper asked,"What's that?" Mike said,"It's a computer programming language." Hopper told Bob,"Teach it to me."

I rolled my eyes, and Bob said,"Shall I teach you French too while I'm at it, Jim? How about a little German?" He looked at Owens. "How about you, Doc? You speak BASIC?" Owens said,"No." Bob scoffed, and said,"Okay, I got this. I got this." Mom shook her head, and said,"No. Bob." Bob hugged her, and said,"It's okay. It's gonna be okay.Remember, Bob Newby, superhero." Mom chuckled slightly, and then, Hopper and Bob left the room. Hopper came back shortly, and we watched Bob, as he made his way to the computers...After he booted up the computers, Bob was blocked by a monster...He managed to distract it with the sprinkler system, and then, he ran. Hopper hefted Will over his shoulder, and Owens stayed behind, handing Hopper a walkie to warn us of any more surprises, and we all raced out of the room..We made it to the doors, and everyone except me and Mom went outside...Mom said,"Come on, Bob. Come on." Bob raced out of the doors we'd come through, locking them, and Mom called,"Bob!" He turned, saw her, and smiled...I sighed in relief... And then, the monster broke through the door, leaping on Bob...Mom screamed, and, as the monster dug its claws into Bob, Bob screamed too...Mom screamed,"No!" Hopper raced inside, and fired at the monster..It growled, and then, two more crashed through the same door the first one came through. mom screamed,"No!", and Hopper grabbed her, continuing to fire on the monsters, and I stood, frozen, watching as the monsters tore Bob to shreds...They looked up at me, and chittered, and I felt tears stream down my face, as one came up to me, and sniffed me, cocking its head...I shook my head, and ran out the door, the monsters growling behind me...
