Word spread amongst the kingdom of Idrivesty rather quickly that Prince Roman Guapo was engaged to be married to a baker from the other side of the kingdom named Patton Truffle. Of course, Patton's family was amongst the people who found out about this and had mixed feelings as a result.
Here's the thing: Patton's family didn't mind that he's gay (in fact, they had their suspicions about it), but they were more concerned about him seeking a job that didn't consist of the farming his family had done for generations. For years, they've done all they could to try to convince Patton that he wanted to be a farmer instead of being any other career choice and saw his excessive energy and love of making jokes as nothing but distractions meant to keep him away from his fate unless they used for motivating his working relatives and gathering more crops than average. One night, when Patton was 18, he saved enough money to run away from home and buy enough essentials to turn an empty former music shop into a bakery of his own. As a reminder that he chose his own path, he changed his surname to "Truffle". Ever since it was discovered that Patton was no longer home, his family was under the impression that he was going through a phase and would come crawling back home to be a farmer like he was supposed to be. They were convinced of the idea for years until they found out about the engagement and Patton's career being changed to something else that wasn't farming.
After discussion amongst themselves, they decided that a portion of them would stay behind to work on the crops while the other portion would visit the engaged couple and try to persuade them to have Patton consider farming with the family as opposed to working royal duties. Patton's parents and uncle hailed a horse carriage cab to go to the castle and prepared for all they thought would be good enough to persuade him to come home.
Once they made it to the castle, they all glanced at each other as if silently communicating the same message. They made it to the front door and were granted entrance when Patton's father proclaimed "We're family of the Prince's fiance". As they went inside, they looked around the inside of the castle and were taken aback by the scenery and the size overall. While they were venturing down the halls in a group, they walked by a pair of men that were talking amongst themselves and giggling. They recognized the giggling of one of them, but Patton's mom was the only one to call him out.
"Patton!"
Patton froze in place and felt many emotions. Roman held his hand with concern and glanced at the group behind them.
"Is that your family?" he whispered to his love.
Patton nodded without saying a word.
"Can we get out of here?" Patton quietly asked.
"Hey, it's been years, maybe realizing you've survived on your own for so long has changed their attitude," Roman suggested.
Patton looked at Roman like he just rescued him from a fall before they both turned to face the group. The pair walked towards the smiling group and Patton put on his best polite grin.
"Roman, this is my mother, Gina, my father, Harold, and my uncle, Ernest. Everyone, this is Prince Roman Guapo, my fiance."
They greeted each other in a polite manner and proceeded to roam around and catch up. Ernest tried warning Patton that a lot of responsibility comes with being a prince and that there's only one other prince that could help him, yet there are a lot more helping hands as the family farms. Patton countered the claim by telling him that Roman got him accustomed to royal responsibilities early back when they were just dating since Roman was certain that Patton was the one for him. Gina and Harold tried alerting Roman of how energetic and immature Patton has been at times. As a result, Roman countered those remarks by claiming that Patton knew about self control, especially when it came to running a business, and was considerate and friendly enough to take the needs of the villagers to heart to alert back to Roman. Gina has told Patton that he's been happy as a farmer, which led Patton to remind her that he was explicitly told to be content with being a farmer like a "proper Soiler".
After a day of attempted persuasion towards the couple, they felt smug as they were led to a guest bedroom by Logan, the royal advisor. The group had the idea that Patton ended up unhappy due to missing his old lifestyle. What they either didn't know or knew yet ignored was that Patton was unhappy due to their mindsets still remaining the same.
Patton was wearing a light blue night dress for the sake of comfort as he was overlooking the garden from the balcony. Roman walked his way while wearing Mickey Mouse pajamas. He stood next to Patton and they just stared at the garden together.
"Do you regret being engaged to me?" Patton finally asked since they had a conversation earlier about the talks shared with his family.
"I would never regret being with you. Your child-like and loving nature are part of why I fell in love with you. I do regret not kicking them out of the castle sooner, though," Roman responded.
"I'll be honest, I'd rather have a family who would use me for royal wealth than the family I have now. But, you know, you can't choose your family."
Roman thought for a little while before holding Patton close.
"Blood is thicker than water, but love is even stronger. Remember Pearl from 'Steven Universe'?"
Patton chuckled, not only at the memory of "Steven Universe", but because of how lucky he felt that the Prince he was engaged to just so happened to be so sweet and caring to him.
"Being a Truffle suits you more than being a Soiler. Especially considering how sweet you are," Roman told Patton and was awarded with giggles that were music to his ears.
The next day, Roman and Patton called the group to the throne room to discuss some important matters.
"So, have you decided to stick with whom you are supposed to be?" Gina asked confidently.
"Actually, yes," Patton responded with a smirk before immediately kissing Roman like it was their last chance.
The pair turned back to the group once they stopped kissing.
"You are all supposed to be Soilers and I'm supposed to be a Truffle who is loved for who I am and not forced into a mold," Patton announced, stunning his family.
Before the group could object, Roman snapped his fingers and the group was escorted out by the guards. On their way out the door, they were told by Logan that they won't be welcome at the wedding. The couple smiled at each other and made their way to the kitchen to make a celebratory bundt cake for themselves.
