As Nnenne and Lanre stared at each other, it felt as though time suspended. As though the world was spinning around just the two of them, they could feel air against their skin and their body hairs stood.
Everything that had ever caused them pain physically, emotionally, or mentally began to fade away. They were in that moment, unbothered by any baggage of the past or anticipation of the future. The world felt light. Everything became new.
They jolted back to consciousness and Lanre let go of her hand when their families came into the hospital room. They were overjoyed to see him awake.
"Glad you're back son" his dad said, smiling and ruffling Lanre's faded hairy scalp. His mother hugged him. Mrs George smiled at him while Oluchi spoke of how happy she was to see him awake and how happier she was that he could finally see all the flowers she brought in each time she visited as she arranged a new bunch of flowers in the vase by the bed side.
They all sat and ate the food that they had brought with them for Lanre and Oluchi. They gisted, laughing wholeheartedly like a chime of bells. Nnenne and Lanre watched on smiling as they saw their families as happy as rabbits in a carrot field.
I hope our families can always stay this happy. They both said in their hearts as they watched their families chatter. Their laughter spread across the room like a chime of bells.
EIGHT YEARS LATER
A white BMW parked before a uniquely designed steel gate. The gate beeped and slid open itself. As the car drove into the hedgerow surrounded compound, it followed a walkway across a large lawn.
Valerie stared out the car window, the beauty of the mansion always amazed her no matter how many times she looked at it. It was so spacious, so green and so beautiful.
The white massive house spread across the large compound, two walkways advanced from the two gates in a curvy but straight line towards each other and as they came closer, formed a wide circle which led into the house. Lights decorated the walkway, one inch after the other.
Valerie stepped out of the car into the walkway. She raised a hand to her forehead, trying to block the sunlight as she looked up at the mansion towering over her as if attempting to intimidate her. Flat roofs covered the circular buildings around, leading to a triangle roof to cover that which seated in the middle.
Attached to the mansion were four pillars. One at the left corner and the other at the right corner. Two in the middle just inches apart and directly before the front door. Six long Christmas-like trees, decorated the front of the house. Two on the left and the other two on the right, beside them were tiny flower beddings nicely dressed and trimmed. The other two trees were at the left and right ends of the building.
Large casement windows plastered in a straight-line from left to right at the top part of the of the building as well as the lower part of the building. So open and clear, she could see inside the house from where she stood. She saw a beautiful large silver kettle sitting comfortably in the middle, sprouting water into a circle. Spread around it was another concrete circle to demarcate another wide circle covered with soft mowed green grass like a carpet. She smiled, headed for the boot and took out the several grocery bags.
It had been three years since she started working for the Osinbanjo family. They were the perfect peaceful little family. They lived with honor, respect and dignity. They raised their two little children with good morals and discipline. That was one of the reason she loved working for this family. They not only spoke the word love, but they showed in themselves as well. Working with them, she had learnt a lot and had become attached to them. Especially the kids.
