Nnenne entered into the theatre room. She saw him laying pale and stiff. A doctor came behind her and reassured her that he was dead yet again. She paid him no attention, her gaze remained focused on Lanre. Her lips trembled and her shoulders heaved with emotion, unwilling to back down.
Her lashes brimmed heavy with tears; her hand clenched the doorknob, in a desperate battle against the grief.
A lone tear traced down her cheek as she watched the nurses cover him up and just like that, the floodgates opened. She wept, tears streaming from her eyes, loud, heaving sobs tearing from her throat, and still she did not look away.
"What are you doing? You're going to suffocate him!" She rushed and pushed them, her hands trembling in disbelief.
"I'm sorry ma'am but there's nothing we can do to help him now, he's dead" The nurse gestured towards his body.
"No! He's not dead alright?"
"See!"
"Lanre!" she tapped him.
"Pls wake up and tell this people that they're crazy and you're not dead...." she said in a tremulous voice. The nurses watched her with pity in their eyes. They could feel her pain. Her warm hand rubbed against his cold skin.
"Put off the AC and close the windows, he's feeling cold"
Nnenne saw Oluchi and Lanre's parents at the door. She walked briskly to them.
"Oluchi pls tell Lanre to stand up"
"He plays too much"
"I'm sure this is just another prank of his to get me to cry"
"Please talk to him"Tears glistened in Oluchi as sadness contoured her features.
"He's dead Nnenne" Oluchi held her arm, her voice brittle.
"what do you mean he's dead?" She pulled away and walked back to the bed.She placed her ear on his chest which neither rose nor fell, that contained no beating heart. The nurses tried to pull her away.
"Please..just try one more time, he's not dead. I promise you, just give him one more chance"
"I'm sorry ma. Whatever we try at this point would be of no use, cause he's dead"
"HE IS NOT DEAD!!!!!" She flared."Do you know who he is?" Vein lines clouded her throat and her forehead.
"He's the love of my life"
"He's the reason I'm alive today, the reason I even taught life was worth living after what happened to me"
"He showed me what love is"
"I can't live without him"They ignored her and started again to cover him up and clear the place. Nnenne blocked them, hurriedly picked up the defibrillator and rubbed it against each other and jammed it against his chest.
The nurses rushed at her, seized the machine from her grip and proceeded carefully to pull her away from Lanre due to the injuries she had endured. She was too strong. Dead to the pain in her shoulder and in frustration, she raised her two hands and hit hard on his chest repeatedly. The nurses tugged her away but she held onto his hand and refused to let go.
"You're not dead Lanre! I know you're not dead!"
"Pleaseeeeee, you're not dead!" she struggled, sobbing.
"You can't die when we're finally happy and at peace!"
"You can't show me what love is and take it away from me so quickly!"
"Remember when we made the promise of never giving up!"
"Remember the promise of forever".They had almost lugged her away from him, when she felt his fingers twitch in her grip. The nurses stopped when they heard the heart monitor beep. Everyone's neck turned to it, Lanre's parents, Oluchi and the nurses were left bug-eyed with mouth open as they could see his pulse reading.
Nnenne mouth quirked up in a relieved soft smile. She freed herself from them and hurriedly hobbled to him. She placed her head on his forehead, a drop of her tears ran down onto his closed eyes.
"I knew you'd never leave me" she whispered. The doctor walked to lanre, wide-eyed and his gaze focused on Nnenne. He put on his ear-tube and placed the bell on Lanre's chest. He was left even more staggered when he could hear his heart beating.
Unbelievable!.... he muttered.
