Slightly out of breath, Gaston finally catches up with Adeline.

Good morning, Adeline! Wonderful book you
have there.

You've read it?

Well, not that one. But, you know.
Books.

(Gaston soon handed her the flowers)

For your dinner table. Shall I join you this evening?

Sorry, not tonight...

Busy?

No.
A mortified smile and Adeline is off. LeFou approaches.

So. Moving on?

No, LeFou. It's the ones who play
hard to get that are always the sweetest prey.
That's what makes Adeline so appealing.
She hasn't made a fool of herself just to gain my favor. What would you call that?

Dignity?

It's outrageously attractive, isn't
it?

Gaston looks at the village lasses standing outside of the tavern. They all give him the eye. Gaston saunters over.

Adeline hears the tinkle of a sweet music box tune wafting out of
her father's basement workshop. She sees her sister, Calliope drawing a Rose.

Adeline descends into to her father's dusty work room.

Maurice hunched over his workspace. Adeline quietly watches as he sings along with the music box theme.

Maurice

How does a moment last forever? How can a story never die? It is love we must hold on to Never easy -- but we try

Maurice tinkers with gears on the box, which depicts an artist in a Parisian garret, painting his wife's portrait as she holds a red rose above their baby and child.

MAURICE
Sometimes our happiness is captured Somehow a time and place stand still Love lives on inside our hearts
And always will

Oh, good, Addie, you're back. Can you please hand me the --

Before he can say the word "screwdriver" it's in his hand because Adeline gave it.

And the --
Tweezers.

Then Adeline hands him a small hammer...

No no I don't need --

... soon a spring pops off.

Actually yes, that's exactly what I need.

He goes back to tinkering. Adeline gazes at other music boxes, each a small work of art, depicting famous landmarks from around the world.

Papa, do you think I'm odd?

My Addie? Odd? Where did you get an idea like that?

I don't know. People talk.

Oh. People. This village may be small, small-minded even, but small also means safe.
Maurice can see this line of argument doesn't do much for his eldest daughter.

Even back in Paris, I knew a girl who was so different, so daring, so ahead
of her time that people mocked her until the day they found themselves
imitating her.
Just tell me one more thing about her. I may have forgotten about it but please! I won't tell Calliope

Maurice turns to the music box as if to change the subject.
But looking back up to Adeline's eagerness, he relents.

Your mother was... fearless.
Fearless.
