Chapter Fourteen

I lay down on the mattress, trying to get some sleep in, but there was no use. All I managed to do was drift in and out of sleep while staring at the ceiling in between. My thoughts were filled with Derek. Hundreds of questions kept circling my mind about this whole situation. Questions I want answers to.

I wonder when he means by ‘later’. It could mean hours or even a few days before he comes back. Guessing from the situation, he would have to come when my dad isn’t around. Actually, I wouldn't mind being locked up here rather than face my father though. I really wished I had my watch with me because it’s agonizing not knowing what time it is.

I sat up on the mattress, leaning my back against the wall as I inspect my injuries. Just a few scratches here and there from fighting Sean and Mike. Then, I remembered the huge bruise on the side of my face; I can feel it stinging. I hear a pair of heavy footsteps down the hall, followed by the sound of keys jingling. I stayed still on the mattress, looking at the door, preparing for the worse. The door opens, revealing the other guy. Sean. I sigh a breath of relief that it wasn’t my dad behind the door earlier.

“Here.” He drops the tray of food on the side of the bed. “Your dad wants you to eat before he questions you again later.” Sean then turns and leaves, locking the door behind him.

I look down at the platter of food. A slice of ham and lettuce in between two pieces of bread, which was now messed up after Sean dropped it. Alongside the tray is a bottle of water that had rolled from its previous position on the tray.

I think about whether or not to eat it or not, thinking of all the possibilities that he could have done to the sandwich, but my growling stomach tells me to pick it up and eat it anyways.

As I am halfway done, I see a shadow walk pass outside and a piece of white paper slips into the room. I stare at it blankly as if I was something to happen, but nothing follows. I walk up to it and pick it up. I unfold it slowly, wondering what could be inside. The letter reads:

I’m coming up with a plan. Trust me on this. I want you to walk behind Sean when he comes to get you later.

-D

It was handwritten by him, so I had no doubts about it. I sat back down, losing the appetite to eat the sandwich because of the nervous feeling in my gut. I folded the piece of paper and shoved it into my pocket. I continue staring up at the white ceiling, wondering what will happen now.

I twirl my thumbs around each other to pass time as I lay still on the mattress. I really wish I hadn’t gone to the market that night. Well, actually this would have happened anyway cause my dad wanted to hunt me down since I left California. Adam is probably worried sick by now since he hasn’t heard anything from me in a couple of days. Same with Skylar; the last she’s heard from me is when I texted her that I was going to the market.

I really wish there was a way I could tell them that I’m somewhat okay rather than have them worried to death. I tried to get some sleep, but again, I had no luck. I heard keys jingle on the other side of the door. Immediately I knew it was time. It was time I had to face him again. Sean reappeared behind the door like he did earlier.
