Chapter Twelve

There's always a moment in life when you finally realize when life isn't all just fun and games. Most people realize it when they're older, but sometimes the time comes when you least expect it. I wasn't very lucky on that part. I realized it all when I was eight-years-old. I knew that life for me wasn't what it is for every other eight-year-old. But I still had to be valiant.

I awaken drowsily as I felt the bed mattress move. I looked over to my right side where Adam had slept last night. He was already dressed in a new outfit that I did not recall him bringing in last night.

"Where are you going?" I asked in a raspy, morning voice.

Adam sat down on the bed and said, "I got a call earlier. My manager wants me at Florida for a magazine shoot with the guys. He said it'll only take a day or two. It was a last minutes thing I didn't even know about honestly. I'm really sorry for leaving you all the time. I promise when I get back, there won't be anything to interrupt us. Okay?"

I nodded. "Is this what the life of a rock star is like?" I asked out of curiosity.

"I guess so." He shrugged. "When I first started my career, I had no idea that I would be this busy."

I managed to pull a small smile on my face. "You promise right? A day or two and it'll be us only." I may sound a little selfish, but I really want to spend time with him since we rarely got to lately.

"I promise." He placed a gentle kiss in between my eyebrows. "You should get to work before you're late again." He said, emphasizing the word, again.

"I was never late!" I protested. "Well, maybe a few minutes late, but it wasn't that bad." I confessed afterwards, smiling sheepishly.

Adam left about ten minutes later. I eventually got out of bed and got ready for work.

I made it on time to work, despite the morning traffic. I greeted the same usual people as I did everyday and took the same elevator next to the restroom up to the 33th floor.

I plumped down into my office chair and turned on the computer. I opened my emails and there was one from Mr. Collins.

I opened the email. It read:

8:24 AM

Hello Ms. Harris, I will not be at work today. I have some important last-minute business I need to do. If there's anything important, please call me. Thank you.

Derek Collins

CEO of Parker and Collins Enterprises

I continued on with my work. When it was time for lunch, I went out with three other co-workers at a Chinese restaurant that was two blocks away.

We talked about a lot of things, from our personal lives to gossip around the office. To be honest, I got somewhat closer to them during lunch.

I returned promptly after we finished and resumed my work. I haven't heard from Mr. Collins for the rest of the day. He didn't mention to me about anything coming up, so I assumed it wasn't work-related. Probably something personal. I finished up the rest of my paperwork and I drove my car home at five o' clock.

I unlocked the front door to the apartment with the set of keys on my NYU lanyard and headed straight to my room and changed into a casual outfit.

I picked up my phone and decided to call Adam. I heard seven rings before it went to his voicemail system. I guess he's busy. I hung up and flicked on the television to watch some shows.
