Chapter One
My name is Eleanor. I had turned 18 a few weeks ago, but I had decided to stay in LA. I decided to finish and graduate high school. Although I wanted to leave everything behind once I turned 18, I had to push myself through to get my diploma because I knew graduating would come with much greater rewards.
My childhood was horrible. It was pretty much a typical sob story. My dad was an alcoholic and he was never home. If he did come home, he would be drunk and he would hurt and abuse my mom in any way possible. I had witness a lot of it. He would threaten me if I reported the abuse to the police or anyone. So I stayed quiet, I knew what he was capable of doing.
It hurts seeing my mom in pain everyday. She passed away 4 years ago when I was a freshman in high school. Since my mom left, my dad started abusing me. Although it wasn't as bad as he abused my mom, I would still have bruises and cuts on my body. But I still stayed quiet. At times I really wanted to just give up on life.
I really couldn't take it anymore at times. I wanted to just escape, runaway and start my life over somewhere else. Somewhere far away, somewhere he wouldn't be able to find me. Somewhere I can start my life over without being afraid.
Today was the last day of school. I watch the clock tick as the teacher handed out a diploma to each of the students in the class.
"Congratulations Eleanor." My teacher smiled as she placed the diploma on my desk.
I gave her a small smile back. Minutes later the bell rang, signaling that school was out. Finally. I'm free. I'm free from this torture zone forever. I nearly ran down the halls of the school, heading for the exit. As I arrived at the front door of the school, I still heard voices talking about me. I've grown used to the insults, they meant nothing to me now. I didn't care about what they think. They could say what they want and it wouldn't be true. I would never see them ever again.
I walked straight home, not stopping at all. I unlocked the front door with the set of keys I managed to get. I knew my dad wouldn't be home. He was never at home during this time of the day. This was my chance. The chance I had been planning for weeks. the day I was looking forward to for years.
I headed into my room, reaching into the closet and taking out a mid-sized suitcase. I packed most of my clothes in. I headed into the bathroom for the essentials. I grabbed my camera, laptop and my iPod that my mom gave me as a present before she passed away and a stash of cash that I had earned over the past few years from a part time job.
I think that was all I needed. I double-checked everything, making sure I didn't leave anything important behind. I loaded my luggage into the back of my mom's car. I headed back into the house and got a map of where I needed to go. I walked out the back door and saw a picture of my mom and I. My eyes brimmed with tears. Memories flooded back of the good times we had with each other. I really missed her; she was an amazing person. I immediately grabbed the picture and walked out.
I headed out of the driveway, it was a bittersweet moment, but I was ready for this change. I planned to move as far away from him as possible. It was always a dream of mines to move to New York. After months of planning, I decided I could study there and start my life over there. I had applied to NYU back in November and I was elated when they had accepted me.
I followed the directions on the map that I had planned out. By sundown, I reached the border of California and Nevada. It wasn't much progress for a few hours, but I wanted to travel slowly so I could capture all the beautiful moments onto camera. And treasure all the sunrises and sunsets. After all, there is no reason to rush life.
I really love traveling, maybe it was because I never left LA. We never traveled as a family. Everything outside of LA seems to fascinate me. Call me weird, but I'm the type of person that would drive across the country rather than getting on a plane. I love sightseeing and going around taking pictures of my trip and enjoying nature.
I turned into a run down motel. I couldn't afford to stay at a fancy 5 star hotel with the budget I had. I had to use all my money wisely. After I dropped all my luggage off at my room, I drove to the nearest restaurant for dinner. I was really tired so as soon as I got back to the motel, I fell into deep sleep.
I woke up the next morning at 9:00. I got up to take a shower and change into a shirt with a leather jacket, black jeans and black boots. I packed up all my luggage and head onto the road again.
I headed up Nevada towards Utah. I had planned months ago that I would stop by a national forest and relax and take a bunch of photos. I followed the sign that led me to the Fishlake National Forest. As I arrived, I parked the car and took my camera bag with me. I walked up a trail snapping a photo whenever I saw something beautiful and breathtaking. Everything seems fascinating to me.
Photography was another thing that fascinated me. As a lot of people say, pictures speak more than words. It was true. A picture could last much longer than the moment itself. My love for photography had grown over the years of my mom's passing. It was something I turned to whenever I was sad. It helped me get away from the world.
Nothing much happened for the rest of that day. It went by like yesterday. I would rent a motel room and go get some dinner by myself. Not the most exciting thing, but it was needed.
Day 3's journey would be from Colorado to Oklahoma. I had always wanted to visit Oklahoma. I love the countryside. It's really peaceful and calm. I exited the highway and drove into Oklahoma City. This time I decided to get dinner first and then head to my motel since I was really hungry and I was worried the restaurant would be closing soon.
I drove for a few blocks before finding the restaurant of my choice. Black Angus, one of my favorite steakhouse. I was craving some deliciously juicy steak.
I turned into the parking lot and a pair of bright white lights flashed before my eyes. I slammed on the brakes as fast as I could while honking my horn. Unfortunately, that didn't help at all. The guy in the black Porsche apparently didn't have a fast reaction and his car ran into mines. It wasn't a really huge impact, but it dented into the front of my car.
"Are you kidding me?" I mumbled to myself as I headed out of my car. I can't believe this is happening.
"Shit. I'm so sorry!" The guy said as he got out of his car. It was really dark. I couldn't see his face. We got closer and I could finally see what he looked like.
"Why didn't you hit your brakes? I even honked at you! Are you really that stupid?!" I wasn't furious, but I might have been a little pissed off. I couldn't believe it. Why would this happen to me? Out of all people.
"I'm really sorry. Let me call my insurance company." The guys shrugged as he took out his phone.
His emotion seemed apologetic. He seemed sincere. He had jet black hair and some facial hair. He looked about 6 feet tall. I would be lying if I said he wasn't good looking.
After calling his insurance company, he walked over to where I was standing. "My name's Adam, by the way." He said, glancing at me, a smirk plastered on his face.
"Eleanor." I replied, looking at the floor. I felt his eyes on me, which made me very nervous.
"I like your jacket." Adam said, amused.
"Thanks." I replied, smiling as I felt my cheeks heat up. I rarely got compliments and coming from him, it made me blush.
The insurance company came a few minutes later and the guy checked out my car which was dented more than Adam's.
"Looks like your car battery is damaged. I'm afraid I'll need to tow your car to be fixed. We will call you once it's fixed." The tow guy said.
Great. Just great. How am I suppose to continue my trip now? I couldn't afford things to be delayed.
"Need a ride?" Adam asked, leaning from the side of his car, arms crossed. He just read my mind.
What's the worst that can happen? Adam could be a rapist and he can have my kids. I'll be perfectly fine with that. Haha, no. Sighing, I hesitantly replied,"Sure." I had no other choice.
