It Was Goodbye For Good

I'm sitting on my couch watching a movie. Daniel is out with the boys. My phone begins to ring and I pick it up.

"Hello?" I question.

"Hi, is this Alyssa Avery?" I hear the other voices say.

"This is she." I reply.

"This is Doctor Joy, I'm calling about Marylinn. She had you as one of her emergency contacts." The doctor says. My heart drops to the bottom of my stomach and I sit up.

"Is she okay?" I question.

"I'm afraid she has been in a car crash. Unfortunately after all of our best efforts, she died at 5:07pm." The voice says.

"This is a joke. She can't be dead." I say my voice shaky.

"I'm afraid this is not a joke, Miss Avery."

"S-she's my best friend...was my best friend." I say tears forming in my eyes.

"I'm so sorry for your loss. Do you want me to call back at a later time?"

"Y-yes." I hang up. I curl my knees up to my chest and bury my face in my knees. I start sobbing. Moments later I get a call from Grace. I answer.

"Hello?" I wipe tears away from my eyes.

"Was that a joke? Is Marylinn really gone?" I hear her voice shaky on the other end.

"No, I wish it was." I say letting a sob out.

"Oh my god." I hear the phone hit the floor. I hear sobs on the other end. I hear Tom. "Grace? Grace? What happened? Hello? Allie? What happened?" He asks.

"Marylinn, she's dead." I cry out into the phone.

"Oh god. I'm gonna let you go. Is Daniel there?" He asks me.

"No, h-he went out." I reply.

"Call him. I'm so sorry for your loss." He says. I hear Grace cry out. "I'll be in touch."

"Yeah." I say and hang up. I let out loud cries and stand up. I walk up to my bedroom and go to the bathroom. I turn the shower on and sit down in the shower fully clothed. I cry loudly.

After about 15 minutes I hear Daniel walk in. I don't care and keep crying.

"Alyssa?" I hear him yell.

I hear loud sobs come from upstairs. "Alyssa??" I yell. I drop my stuff and run up the stairs. I follow he sound to the bathroom. I see her sitting in the shower fully clothed, sobbing and her clutching her heart.

"Alyssa? What happened?" I say stepping into the shower.

"S-She's gone. Marylinn i-is dead." She gets out.

"Oh my god, Allie." I say sitting behind her. I wrap my arms around her. The water getting me sopping wet. She continues to cry and I hold her. After a while she calms down a bit.

"When we said goodbye on that day, I told her I would see her later. But now I never will." She says. She turns around to face me, her eyes red and puffy.

"I know, I know." I tell her. She wraps her arms around my neck and buries her face in my neck. I pick her up and turn the shower off. I put her on the bathroom sink. "I'll be right back." I go to the closet and grab some clean clothes. I come back and she's staring at the floor. I help her into the clean and dry clothes and then I change myself. I pick her up and put her in bed. I tuck her in and kiss her head. I get get in bed too.

"Is there anything I can get you?" I ask her. She shakes her head no. "I love you." I tell her.

"I love you too." She whispers. She closes her eyes and she quickly falls asleep. I look at her and smile. I close my eyes and fall asleep too.

*A week later at Marylinn funeral*

After the ceremony we head to the grounds where Marylinn was going to be buried. We face timed Grace since she couldn't travel.

 As Marylinn is lowered into the grave I feel Daniel holding me.

"You bitch." I mutter. "I was supposed to go first and this wasn't suppose to happen until we were old and grey and had 50 cats." Grace starts to laugh and I do too. We try not to, but we can't help it.

"The four of use were gonna live in a house at 90, be old and grey. Have like 100 cats and I would be the first to go." I say loudly. I hear Grace laugh and everyone does too.

Once it's over, me and Daniel go for lunch at my favorite place in my home town.

"Are you okay?" He asks me.

"Honestly? No. I just lost my best friend. But I know she would say, 'bitch, don't cry over me.' I can practically hear her now." I say. We both chuckle.

"I'm here for you." He says taking my hand from across the table.

"I know." I say.
