I wonder where would they go. I wonder if dad will come back.
Wait, of course he will. We visit grandma every week. What am I saying?
I just need to know what happened in between.
I bid grandma goodbye as I transported to another place.
"Doctor, I'll have to leave earlier today." a woman greeted Mr. Kelly as he walked head down. Wait! She's familiar. She is mom!! What? What is she doing here?
I didn't know she worked as a nurse in a hospital. That is why she was so good at taking care of us.
Mr. Kelly nodded. Mom noticed his silence. "Doctor, are you all right?" "Just go!" Mr. Kelly exclaimed. "Ah, I'm sorry. You may go." Mr. Kelly said calmly as he saw Mom's surprised face.
Mom grabbed a taxi cab and I went with her. Mom was silent during the ride. The siren from an ambulance cut the silence. "That's the third ambulance I heard all day." The taxi driver joked. "Wait, I feel like I forgot something." Mom said. "What?!" The taxi driver looked irritated. "I'm really sorry. Can you just drop me off back in the hospital? I'll pay you twice." Mom pleaded.
Mom rushed to get something on her desk. She got a blue paperbag. "Ok, let's go." Mom whispered to herself. Just as she opened the door, another nurse saw her. "Oh, there you are Sania!" Mom looked someone just caught her doing something illegal. "Uhm, yeah. I'm really sorry but I have to go." She pleaded holding her blue paperbag. "Please, Sania. We need help." the nurse asked her if she could stay for the patients. Mom breathed deeply. "Ok, is it the ambulance I heard all the way here?"
The nurse eyes lit up. "Yes, but I'll have to exchange places with you since I think you are in a hurry." She looked weird to mom. "Wait, what are you saying? Exchange places?" The nurse pointed on the next room. "He is really uncooperative. I tried to ask him questions but he would not answer."
I think the nurse just gave up to this patient.
"Ok, I know you can handle this Sania." Mom saying to herself while walking towards that direction. "She may be bothered by hard-headed patients." I thought. As she brushed the curtain with her hand, I was surprised! It was my dad! Oh my! What happened to dad?! He has bruises all over the face with his knuckles bleeding.
Mom breathed deeply while she looked at him. "Sir, may I know what happened?" Dad just looked at her and looked back down. "Sir, may I know what happened?" Mom repeated. "No!" Dad exclaimed. Mom inhaled and exhaled deeply. "For the last time, sir. I need to know what happened so that I could help you." Mom sounds pleading to dad. "Do you think you could help me?! No on could help me!" Dad yelled. "Ok that's it!" Mom whispered and left. Mom went to the help desk and asked them to call the other nurse. "I'm really sorry Ryan but can you call Cynthia for me." She pleaded. "I just can't take care of that man and I have to go." She pointed towards dad's direction. "Is it really urgent? Do you really need to go?" Ryan, the assistant in the help desk asked. "Uhm, yeah. I have to go." Ryan doesn't have the authority to let her stay so he let her go. Mom saw his sad reaction and tried to ignore it.
We were outside and waiting for a taxi cab for almost twenty minutes now. Mom seems to be thinking of the situation. After a minute, she turned around. She rushed to help desk and asked Ryan if there were nurses with dad. Ryan said there was none and she rushed to the room.
Okay, will mom will take care of dad?
"Okay, sir. I really have to go now but I can't just leave you here like that." Mom stared at dad looking at his bleeding hand. "Why did you come back if you really have to go?" Dad, in a serious tone, asked and looked at mom. "To hear you speak. At least we are now in a conversation." Mom looked serious. I think dad noticed it. He imitated mom's scrunched up face and said, "Go now." Mom didn't know if he is really serious of letting her go or just making fun of her. But, she laughed. It sounds genuine.
"Why did you ask me all of a sudden?"
"Did I?"
"Didn't you?"
"Look, miss. I want this to be over so I could soon get home."
"Why didn't you say that a while ago? I was ready to leave."
"I don't know I just realized that I was not really everyone's favorite. But you came back, so I had to ask you."
"Ask me what? You know what, give me your hand, I'll wipe it."
"I had to ask you what made you come back to me?"
"Hmm. That's sounds interesting. But first, give me your hand." Mom offered her hand while holding a cloth on her other hand.
Dad gave his hand.
"Okay, good. To really answer your question, I really do not want go back. I wanted to leave. I was waiting for a taxi cab but twenty minutes have passed no taxi showed up. I was thinking of maybe God wanted me to stay here."
"So that's why you came back?"
"Maybe God was telling me to go back and take care of a stubborn man."
Dad laughed and when mom saw him laughing, she laughed too.
"I can't go without a nurse or a doctor signing up the papers. So I asked God if someone could attend to me. If I need to be nice so I could go home, I will."
"Really? You are not nice to me."
"I have no one to talk to."
"That's sad." Mom stopped wiping his hand and took a cotton from a small bottle. She put something in it and started to press it against dad's bruises on his face.
"Why don't you call your family? Or your friends?"
"I still communicate with my friends but they are not here around the city. They left the city for new jobs."
"Your family?" Mom asked as she pressed the cotton a little harder.
"I don't know." Dad said before he pulled mom's wrist away on his face. "I'm sorry, it's personal."
Mom understood him and she agreed to sign the papers for dad to get dismissed. "Don't get into trouble next time."
"Yes, I won't." Dad smiled as he walked down to his car. He noticed mom walking towards the taxi cab sign. Dad drove his car in front of mom.
"Would you like a free ride?" Dad smirked at mom with his left eye squinched.
Mom chuckled. "What happened? You're getting nice."
"Hop in or you'll never see me again." Dad joked.
Mom lowered her eyebrows and narrowed her eyes. "You know what if I'm not in a hurry, I won't be doing this." Mom hopped in and I watch them drove off.
So, this is how they met.
I smiled as dad's car get smaller and smaller in the distance. "I wonder when will I see mom and dad again?" I whispered.
After whispering that, a shadow appeared from a distance. It gets bigger and bigger as it approached me. What is that?
I ran to the nearest lightpost and it chased me down to my feet. I held on the lightpost as I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I heard a man's deep voice. "Do you miss them?"
