-Alan-
“Interesting,” a female voice said a few moment later, “You his new project?”
I turned around. “Project?” This girl was gorgeous. Her legs went on forever, and her hair hung in waves down to her chest.
“Yup, project.” she grabbed a cup of beer and drank, “he picks a freshman every year.”
“He does?” Dread filled my stomach, my consciousness.
“What can I say? He gets bored easily. By Christmas, he will have forgotten your name and moved on to the next,” her nose wrinkled in distaste, “guy. Let me guess. Small town? Innocent? Everything a powerful guy like Austin is attracted to, but nothing he would actually go home to if you get my meaning.”
No, I didn’t really get her meaning.
“He saves as many as he can, and then parties with the ones who actually give a shit about him and his pathetic life,” she continued, “So enjoy it while you did. I know I did.” SHe took another long sip just as Austin walked back into the room.
The minute his eyes fell on the girl, I could’ve sworn he snarled. “What. The. Hell. What are you doing here, Gielle?”
“I was invited.” she purred,”Besides, you should be happy I’m here, it’s good press to see us together like nothing happened.”
His hands clenched at his sides.
“But it did happen.” Austin growled.
“Says who?” SHe threw her head back and laughed. “I was just getting to know your new little friend here.
“And we were just leaving.” Austin tugged me closer to him and started to steer us towards the door.
“Remember what I said, freshman.” Gielle called as she waltzed out of the room.
I exhaled and and followed Austin out of the house. I turned around to see the two men he’d pointed out earlier trailing about one hundred feet behind us as we walked up the street we had just come down, and they were holding hands? Oh well, they were super cute. I ship it.
“I know you don’t know me,” Austin’s tone was clipped, as if all the joy had been suddenly sucked out of him, “But you can’t trust anything that girl says. She’s big trouble. SHe’s not supposed to be within ten miles of me, much less ten feet.”
“Is she a student here?”
“Nah.” He laughed without humour. “She graduated a year ago. Our parents were close.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Were?”
“Yeah,” he jerked his head down and cursed as he bit his lip, “Until everything went down last year. It doesn’t help that she’s a struggling actress. The one and only time I’ve seen her succeed was selling a part where she was trying to put me in jail for something I didn’t do.”
“I’m sorry.” My heart clenched in my chest.
“Don’t be,” Austin sighed “What’s done is done, right?”
“Right.” I mumbled.
“I’m not feeling very well, I think I’m catching something” he stumbled a bit, “So, being the gentleman that I am, I’m going to nicely walk you back to your room and then head to mine to sleep.”
“Have it all planned out, do ya?” I teased.
He actually laughed. Wow. His face lit up when he was happy. I wanted to be the reason for his happiness, even though I knew it was ridiculous. I barely even knew the man, and what I had been told let me know that he probably wasn’t the best person to hang out with.
“Alan?” The party was still raging by the time we got into the elevator.
“Yeah?” I whispered.
“Thanks.”
“For what?” My breathing became erratic as his eyes focused on my lips then snapped back up to meet my gaze.
“For believing me.”
I reached for his hand. What was I doing?! Red Alert alarms were going off in my head.
I clenched his fingers in mine.
“Until you give me a reason not to trust you, I’ll always believe you. It’s what people do.”
“Blindly trust complete strangers?” His eyes rested on the elevator doors. They had glazed over and he looked really pale.
“Alan,” voice gruff, he leaned against my door. “I don’t want to be your friend.”
“Oh.” I hated how I felt my stomach just dropped to my knees, and like he said he hated Christmas and puppies and wanted to burn every romance book on my kindle.
“More.” he whispered, and this time I could feel the heat from his lips as they moved against my ear while he talked. “With you, I think I’ll always want to be more. But-” he sighed as he pulled away and held out his hand, “I’ll settle for friends, if the offer still stands.”
My fingers tingling, I reached for his hand and shook. His smile lit up my world. It shattered my previous existence, and again that same eerie feeling washed over me. Like I was running out of time, or maybe like the darkness was coming again. I tried to pull away, but he kept holding my hand. I hated that feeling of losing control, usually the meds helped, but right then it was like his eyes were asking for me to jump into the blackness with him and I wasn’t sure if I was ready to do that yet.
“It’s going to be okay.” He whispered, taking a piece of my hair and tucking it behind my ear.
“What is?”
“Your first day of class.” A sad smile crossed his face. “What else would I be talking about?”
“Oh you know… life.” I joked, trying to get his other smile back.
His smile faded. “Goodnight Alan. Have dreams of me.”
“And your six pack?” I offered.
He threw his head back and laughed. “Wow. I needed that. Thanks. Friend.”
“Anytime,” I fought to keep myself from touching him, “Friend.”
“I think you may be the best friend I’ve ever had.” He didn’t move. Instead, Austin watched me, and his eyes seemed to take in every detail about me as if I was going to disappear in a few seconds.
“That’s a good thing, right?”
“I wish I knew.” He pointed down the hall. “Well, my room beckons me, as does practice at five am. Goodnight, Alan.”
