Beta! Hinanami: The Thin Line Part One

It was a horrible experience...something that could scar you for life. Chiaki thought it would never happen to her. She and Hajime had been together for almost four years; there was trust invested. She didn't want to believe that he would cheat on him...but alas, it happened.

She found herself staring inside the classroom in shock. Hajime was making out heavily with some girl she didn't know. She couldn't speak and couldn't move. Her heart shattered into pieces and tears fell down her face.

"Chiaki!" Hajime gasped in shock and immediately jumped off the desk. The girl covered herself with her shirt in embarrassment.

Chiaki ran away before he could get to her. She could hear him yelling her name, but ignored him entirely. Pushing the doors outward, she left the school in the pouring rain. The cold drops shivered her as it soaked through her clothes but it didn't matter. All she wanted to run as far as she could.

Arriving home, she kicked off her shoes, climbed up the stairs and fell onto her bed. She cried even when there were no more tears left. The pain felt unbearable and she wished that she didn't have to see him again.

Hajime stood outside of the school, calling Chiaki on his cell phone. Much to his disappointment, she wouldn't answer. He wanted to tell her that it wasn't his fault and that the girl came on to her. He wanted to hold her and tell her it was going to be okay.

'You blew it, Hajime!' He scolded to himself. 'You couldn't stay away...and now you're paying the price.'

Sighing, he put his hands in his pockets and walked on home.

From that point on, things didn't get better. They avoided each other, never once looking at each other. Hajime would go to his extracurricular clubs while Chiaki would either study at the library or go home after school. This was a concern for their friends.

"I hate seeing them like this." Ibuki said one day during lunch. "They were adorable together."

"Well...maybe if he hadn't decided to 'study' with what's-her-face, we wouldn't have this problem." Kishiko responded with a huff.

"Kakyoku-san..." Nagito sighed. "That's not very nice."

"Well, it's true." She snapped back.

"We need to do something..." Peko suggested. "Just get them in the same room for a few minutes."

"I doubt that is possible." Fuyuhiko objected, swallowing his food. "They are both in different classes. Hell, they don't even have the same clubs."

"Well, what about after school?" Ibuki asked. "Like we would say like we wanna hang out but we ditch them."

"You do know that they will just leave if we did that." Kishiko remarked. "Don't be stupid, Ibuki."

"No..." Nagito muttered. "She is onto something there...I got it. Everyone, gather around."

"Chiaki!" Kishiko waved down the Ultimate Gamer as she was leaving the school.

"Oh hello! Aren't you supposed to be headed to practice?" Chiaki asked with a puzzled look.

"Yeah...but I need to ask you something." Kishiko responses while looking down at her shoes. "You see...I am going to a karaoke night with Ibuki Saturday night. We were wondering if you want to tag along?"

"I don't know..." She hesitated.

"Come on, Chiaki!" Kishiko whined. "I know you're still upset...but you cannot just stay in your house all day."

"You just don't get it!" Chiaki yelled at her. "You don't how it feels to have your heart broken! You just act like you are a know it all, but you are nothing but a bully!"

Kishiko remained silent. Chiaki realized what she had done and began to cry. "I am so sorry...I just..."

"I know..." Kishiko replied, hugging her friend. "I am sorry for pushing you...we can postpone karaoke night."

Chiaki nodded. It was still too fresh of a wound, seeing what he did. She just needed time to think. "I appreciate your concern, Kishiko...I really do."

"Yeah...if he hurts you again, let me know. I'll beat the crap out of him." Kishiko said with a bright smile on her face. Chiaki giggled. "Hey, can I at least walk you home?"

"What about practice?"

"I lied about that...let's go."

On the way out, Kishiko texted the others that the plan was on hold, to which they agreed.

A few days went by, and things were less stressful. Chiaki was walking to the library as she saw Hajime at the doors, looking at his phone. She stopped dead in her tracks. The memory of him with that girl came flashing back. It didn't hurt as much but there was still this numbing pain.

"Oh, Chiaki..." Hajime said after he looked up. "Hi..."

"Hello." She responded back.

Things got awkward after that. There was this tense feeling surrounding them and it made them uncomfortable.

"S-So..." Chiaki tried to break the silence, face blushing. "Why are you...you here at the library?"

"Oh, uh..." Hajime stuttered, completely caught off guard. "Nagito wanted to do a study session...but he hasn't shown up yet."

"Hmm." Chiaki nodded. The silence, though not as tense, came back. It was difficult to hold a conversation without addressing the 'elephant in the room'.

"Umm..." Hajime decided to give the ice breaking a try. "Are you going into the library as well?"

"Actually...no." She replied. "I was going to go shopping with my mom."

"That's nice." He concluded, but he didn't let the silence in. "Hey...I know this isn't the best time to discuss this...but..."

"I know...we do need to talk about 'it'." Chiaki agreed. "Maybe...over the weekend...?"

Hajime's heart fluttered in high spirits. "Yes...I would like that...A lot."

"Okay...text me where you want to meet." Chiaki suggested as she gave him a friendly hug. "See you soon, Hajime."

As she walked off, she felt his warmth fading away. She missed it so much: being held by him, but she needed to be brave. In time, they will work it out...but would it be too late..?

Do not worry, a part two is coming up. I wanted to do a sad piece this time around. Also, I keeping popping my OC in these stories...it is becoming a bad habit. Sorry.
