"Think it'll work?"

Cass's eyes snapped up from her shaking fingers, accepting the cold glass of water that Steve had insisted she drank after she complained about the heat despite the frosty chill biting the air. Shrugging, taking a sip and setting the chilled glass on a coaster, she mumbled in response, "It's really the only thing we have going for us right now."

At the hopeless glimmer on her face, Steve Harrington sunk into the coach next to her, putting an arm behind the girl. "Hey," His voice was just soft enough to get Cassie's attention, making her turn her body to face him, her legs criss-crossed.

"You know everything's gonna work out, right?" He tried desperately to believe his own words, especially if it'd soothe the worry out of Cass's mind.

"Maybe," The word lingered in the air, the negativity behind it seeping into Steve's emotional pores.

Without thinking, Steve reached forward, arms embracing the girl in front of him who instantly melted into him. The two went down on the couch, hushed laughter filling the small gap between their faces. Cass's back was against the back of the couch, Steve now laying with his back to the open air, and suddenly Cassie became acutely aware of Steve's hand on her bare waist.

The laughter died, ghosts of smiles still gracing their lips and it took everything in both of them to not lean forward. Cass watched Steve take a careful breath, her inner thoughts begging her to lean up and make their emotions physical. Instead, a bitterness coated the curly-haired girl's face, dipping her head forward and leaning her forehead against his chest. She swore if she listened hard enough she could hear both of their broken hearts being stitched together jsut from being this close, providing each other with the missing pieces until maybe, just maybe they could make one, whole, functioning heart.

"You should probably get some rest," Cass's deep thoughts were interrupted as the real thing her body craved got up from the couch. He shed his jacket, mind lingering on the way Cassie had looked up at him just moments before.

She looked like she was ready to protest until Steve threw the jacket at her, Cassie sending him an unimpressed look after it hit the side of her head. Grudgingly, Cass pointed a finger at him, "You tell me if anything happens," her eyes searched his for a moment, before she mumbled, "And don't leave without me, Harrington." Her head rested against the pillow, eyes still vulnerably gazing up at him.

Steve grinned, a glint in his eyes, "I would never leave my favorite sidekick here all by herself."

Cassie sent him another glare, this time with face half hidden by Steve's jacket, the small girl attempting, and surprisingly succeeding, to use it as a blanket. "Favorite?" She grumbled, eyelids closing as an exhaustion she didn't know she felt overtook her. "So there are others?"
