Chapter 6
SmileIt was surreal.
In the best way possible, of course. Maya realised how sheltered she had been her whole life as she stepped into that bar. As she passed the door, she was greeted with a gust of hot wind, laced with strong scents of alcohol and smoke. The air was thick and murky, the people crowding so much that she couldn't see the floor. Her eyes were deafened by a mix of shouting, cheering and the piercing screech of an electric guitar.
Such a sight would surely be distasteful to her parents. But that only made the place all the more exciting for her.
She closed her eyes, feeling the vibrant lights pulsate against her and inhaled the thick air. She felt a hand clasp around hers.
Freddie sighed. "It's times like this when we need Deaky."
Maya laughed. It was easy enough to lose sight of her in a spacious public place. Freddie definitely needed to keep a close eye on her in a packed cluster of people like this. Although Freddie was less skilled at effortlessly guiding Maya around like a sheepdog, his strategy was to simply take her hand and drag her wherever he went. It didn't phase her though. It made it easier for her to let her mind wander as she looked around distractedly, every minuscule detail catching her attention - right from the pool table to the bartender preparing drinks.
As Maya felt Freddie let go of her hand, Rosemary squealed with excitement while linking her arm around Maya's.
"This is our usual spot!" Rosemary situated them both by the side of the stage, which was up close and personal to the band members on stage. It was a miracle that Freddie was able to drag them through the clustered mosh pit of people and get so close to the stage.
"I'm going to get us some drinks!" Freddie shouted over the noise, before whispering in Rosemary's ear and disappearing into the crowd. Although she couldn't hear him, Maya was aware that he just instructed his girlfriend to take care of her while he was gone.
Rosemary giggled at Maya. "You'll dry your mouth out, lovey." She lifted Maya's chin up to close her mouth, which Maya hadn't realised had remained agape since she walked in.
Maya finally out a noise. She wasn't quite sure what it was, but all the excitement she had been holding in since she came here suddenly rushed out in the form of an indiscernible squeal or groan. Rosemary's eyes widened out of her sockets in shock, but soon, curiously attempted to imitate Maya's sound of excitement. The two erupted in a fit of laughter, oblivious to the crowd around them that eyed them in a mix of fear and perplexity.
Their giddiness was put on pause as Brian pulled himself through the crowd, hand-in-hand with a young woman around Maya's age.
A stressed, frantic expression was fixed on Brian's face, as he came huffing out of breath towards them.
