Chapter 16
Giddy Up><><
"Surprise, darling!"
"What are you guys doing here?" Maya gave an expression falling in between a grimace and smile as Roger, Brian and John appeared behind Freddie.
It had been a while since they had all been in the same room together. She hoped that they'd get the chance to hang out again, but she didn't expect them all to show up at her job.
The four of them held in a laugh as they eyed Maya up and down. It finally made sense why Maya never spoke much about her job. They knew that she dreaded her work as a waitress, but she failed to tell them that she was a waitress at a themed restaurant.
A Western-themed diner, to be exact. Cowboys and cowgirls tending to customers. A mechanical bull centred near the entrance. Country songs playing on the jukebox.
Maya buried her face in her hands as she felt their eyes scan her. She was in a flannel shirt and a leather vest with loose fringes hanging off her shoulders. Jean shorts that were much shorter than her liking contrasted with leather boots that were almost knee high. To top off the look, she had to wear a red bandana around her neck and cowgirl hat.
John was the first to spit out a laugh. After that, nobody could contain themselves. They chorused in laughter, while Maya stood there accepting their mockery.
Roger's chuckles died down first, as he eyed Maya up and down.
Yes, the costume was tacky and over-the-top, but jokes aside, she looked great. Plus, it didn't hurt that he tended to lean towards cowgirl fantasies since he was a teenager.
He trailed his eyes from down the boots, up her toned legs and tight-fitted shorts, skirting over the fringes on her vest and meeting her eyes that stared straight back at him. He perked up, instinctively opening his mouth to say something, slightly stunned that he got caught ogling her. But as Maya's cheeks grew scarlet, a smug smirk plastered on his face, proud that he had that effect on her.
Maya grew more unsettled and she pulled down the brim of her hat.
Roger cleared his throat. "So do you get props with that costume?"
Maya sighed, looking up at him and tilting her head in confusion. "Like what?"
"Oh I don't know... like a fake gun... or..." He scratched the back of his head, trying to hide a smirk. "...A whip."
Brian shook his head, lightly pushing Roger by the shoulder. "Alright, we'll leave you be." He let out one last chuckle as he looked at Maya's costume. "We just came to get a break from jamming. Join us when your shift's over, hm?"
Maya smiled as Brian led the guys to a nearby booth.
John followed behind, bobbing his eyebrows up and down at Maya teasingly. Freddie followed next, but before moving along, he snatched Maya's cowgirl hat from her head and placed it on his own. Giggling, he did a chef's kiss and flourished his hands in the air exclaiming "Yeehaw, darling!".
