Chapter 9
Going out with a Bang><><
It could easily go wrong. But in her defence, it seemed like it was a very good idea.
Maya made sure to repeat that in her head like a mantra as she finished setting up the last alarm clock. "Deaks, is that the last of them?"
John responded with an apathetic thumbs up as uncertainty laced his expression. "Are you sure this is going to work?"
"Nope."
"Maya-"
"Oh hush, it'll be fine." Maya's eyes scanned across the library. It would be just under one minute until the first clock would trigger. She squealed slightly in excitement as her surrounding peers gestured a thumbs up too, indicating that their part in this prank had been played.
John found her mischievous grin contagious and soon shared her elated anticipation. "So... what's the plan now?"
"What do you mean?"
"Do we stick around and watch the disaster unfold or do we split?"
"Well, my dear, criminals should always stick around the crime scene in order to throw off suspicion." She mused. She rolled her eyes at John as his nonchalance irritated her. Yet again, he was acting as if he wasn't a true evil mastermind. It was, after all, his idea. Not only that, but he predicted that upon sharing this idea with Maya, she would take it upon herself to adapt this idea into action. In doing so, the prank would happen by his hand and he would remain almost blameless.
They couldn't of timed this more perfectly. By that moment, a sea of teachers and students entered the library, that they observed from the floor above, hidden from sight. "John?" Maya turned to her best friend.
"Any second now..." He eyed his watch carefully. The corners of his mouth etching upwards as each second passed by.
It was agony to wait.
And there it was. Ring. Ring.
The first clock.
The sound of the alarm clock echoed through the library, bouncing its noise off the bookshelves and off every teacher and student that crowded the library, as perplexed furrowed brows were planted on every face. It was only one clock, but against a spacious silent room, it was deafening.
Maya and John exchanged a satisfied, smug smirk upon seeing that the first teacher that took action to look for the source of the sound was Mr. Featherston. Miserable sod. It didn't take long for him to find it hidden away behind a pile of encyclopedias. He turned the clock off and scoffed all too proudly. He predicted his morning to be greeted with a good ol' senior prank but was this the best they could do?
