Chapter 24

"Does Maya like chocolate?"
"When we were kids she'd lick my own fingers for me after I'd have a chocolate eclair." Freddie mumbled barely looking up from his book. "So — And this is an understatement — yes, she loves chocolate. Why do you ask?"
"Just curious." Roger sighed, pouring out the entire bag of chocolate chips across the pan. "Do you think she'll be up soon?"
"Well it's around noon now, so... perhaps not."
Roger chuckled, flipping over the pancake and then letting the pan sit. He turned around, and let his hand ruffle through his bed-head mess of hair as he leaned against the kitchen counter.
"But then again, she might be at Deaky's." Freddie said. "Last I saw her, she was with him. She might've gone home with him."
Roger drew his lips in a thin line. He wasn't too fond of Maya lying about being with John. Even so, a night's rest made him believe that the cold shoulder he gave Maya about it was quite harsh. Maya surely did it in a state of panic. He had rehearsed an apology in his head that very morning, planning to open it with a hot breakfast for her.
Freddie closed his book, tossing it aside on the table. "By the by, I take it Maya's no longer a conquest of yours now that she's with John. But then again, committed women do tend to excite a challenge for you."
"What?" Roger furrowed his brows.
"No need to hide it, darling. It's all too painfully obvious." Freddie smirked, rolling up the sleeves of his robe, or rather the robe he stole off Maya. "I can hardly blame you — us Bulsaras are irresistible."
"What are you talking about? I am not—" Roger sighed when Freddie shot him a knowing glare. Perhaps Roger wasn't one to easily mask his feelings. Freddie, believing that Roger was unsuccessful at wooing a girl of his desire, plastered a smug smirk across his face. Though Roger didn't let it agitate him. After all, even though he wasn't great at hiding his feelings, he had managed to secretly have his way with Maya right under Freddie's nose, in fact, right on Freddie's bed.
"You're not mad." Roger said.
"Is that a question or observation?"
Roger bit his lip, perplexed at Freddie's nonchalance. "It's just — when you found out about Tim at first, your fists were ready to fly. And then finding out about John, you—"
"Tell me Rog, would you feel more at ease if your sister were to date someone like John or someone like Tim?"
"Fair." Roger nodded. "But... I would've thought you'd want to wring my neck knowing that—"
