You can only do so much to protect your children. The day is going to come when they will leave the nest, and the best thing you can do is to prepare them for that day. You have to teach them right from wrong, teach them how, not what, to think and give them confidence in their own decisions. That's the way Dave and I agreed we would raise Travis.

I suppose every mother thinks her child is unique and special, but Travis really was. From the day he was born, he wanted to know, to understand, and he would plague us with questions as soon as he could talk. He had to know "why", and if the answer didn't make any sense to him he would keep asking until it did. I've never known anyone who thought so deeply about things. We used to joke that we should have named him "Wyatt". Wy for short.

Maybe his compassion came from that deep struggle to understand. When you can see into the heart of something, understand it utterly, empathy follows.Travis always followed his heart, his internal truth.
