I lay on my bed with Flash by my side as I played a game on my phone. It was late at night and I couldn't sleep. That wasn't a new development. I was having a lot of trouble sleeping lately. After the accident all I wanted to do was sleep all day every day, and I did exactly that, now though I found myself staying up until ridiculous hours.
"At least you can sleep," I muttered at Flash as he snored away.
I didn't usually have Flash in my room, and especially not on my bed, but sometimes hearing another being breathing beside me was relaxing. Not tonight though. I'd probably end up sleeping through the day instead, which I guess wouldn't be a problem since I didn't have to work on the house anymore.
This was why I couldn't sleep. I was thinking too much about the house and what I was going to do. I was running out of money so I either had to sell the house or start looking for a job. It was always my plan to sell the house, but it didn't seem right anymore. I couldn't imagine strangers living here and having no idea of its history. I also couldn't imagine living here and being happy.
I was tried to distract myself with the game I was playing, and it was kind of working. I jumped a little, startled, when Vic's name came up on my screen and my ringtone started playing. My heart was racing, and not just because the sudden call frightened me, but because I remembered the last time I got a phone call from Vic in the middle of the night.
I answered it quickly.
"Vic?" I asked in a panic.
"Hey, Kellin..." He said.
"Are you okay?" I asked quickly.
"What? Yeah, I'm fine...are you?" he asked.
"Is something wrong?"
He went quiet for a second. I could practically hear my heart thumping away. For a moment there I was actually scared it was happening all over again.
"No...Shit, Kellin, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to freak you out. I guess I didn't realize how late it was," he said.
I sighed in relief. I had over-reacted, but he was okay. Everything was okay. I closed my eyes to calm myself down and get rid of the instant headache I had.
"No, no, it's okay. I'm just being stupid," I said.
"No, you're not. I'm sorry for calling. I probably woke you. Dumb idea. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" he spoke quickly.
"Wait-," I was too late. The line cut off.
I looked at the phone saying the call was cancelled. I rolled my eyes and called him back. He picked up after maybe a minute of ringing, and when he did, he didn't say anything. Something was up.
"You're being weird. What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing's wrong. Not really," he murmured.
"So you called because..." I trailed off.
"I don't know. I just couldn't sleep and...I really don't know," he said with an awkward laugh. This was very unlike him. He was always the one always so sure of everything and now he seemed a little all over the place.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked.
"Everything," he answered honestly.
"Well, there's your problem," I said.
"Thanks a lot, genius. Where'd you get your psych PHD?" he joked.
I smiled and shook my head even though he couldn't see me, "I'm the new Dr. Phil," I told him.
He chuckled on the other end of the line. I wondered what he was doing, if he was home or if he went out. It also made my stomach flutter with butterflies knowing that he called me above anyone else to talk to, then again, he didn't really have that many others he was close to.
