'You know my curfew is 11, I can't go out after prom.' Kat says. You are sitting in the grass field behind the school. It's a beautiful day today and the sun feels hot on your black jeans. You are laying on your backpack, playing with your zippo.
'Come on be a little rebel every once in a while.' Polly says while she takes a drag from a joint you're sharing, the sun making her hair almost a pastel purple.
'I really can't.' Kat answers while she brushes some stray grass from her dress. Her parents are unreasonably strict and she has to ask weeks in advance to go somewhere.
'Womp womp.' You say as you get passed the joint. Maybe it's a better idea to not get high on the middle of a school day, but hey, what's the fun in that?
'Smoking without me huh.' Steve says as he almost reaches the group. You didn't even notice him walking up, his white shirt almost blinding you.

'It's Polly's this time so ask nicely.' You say to Steve while holding your hand in front of your face to protect your eyes from the sun, and Steve's shirt.
'Please.' He say to Polly holding his hands together. Polly nods.
Steve sits next to you and you hand him the joint.
'You look very high already.' He says as he looks at the redness in your eyes.
'I feel very high as well.' You laugh.
The first time you ever did drugs was with Polly at her place. Her parents are full on hippies and didn't mind when you smoke at the house. Kat sometimes joins but it depends on her mood.

The day went by incredibly slowly as you had only boring classes today. Being high didn't exactly help your tiredness in any way. You thought you would never hear that last bell.

You hear the doorbell ring even though the music in your room was turned up pretty loud. You run towards the record player and quickly turn it down.
'I got it.' You say to anyone wanting to hear while running down the stairs, wearing an oversized shirt from your dad as a "dress".
You open the door and see it's not Steve, who you were expecting.
'What are you doing here?' You say a little out of breath.
'I'm looking for Max, is she here?' Billy asks, leaning against one of the pillars outside. He looked a little frazzled.
'I haven't seen her but I'll ask Chris.' You step out of the doorway to let him inside, he takes you in on that offer and steps into your house. He has only been here a couple of times, since he likes avoiding Steve as much as he can.
'Chris!' You yell while walking down the basement steps.
Chris looks up from his walkie-talkie. 'Have you seen Max?' You ask while you look around the room, half expecting to see some red hair pop up.
'Oh no I haven't.' He says, a little nervously. Christopher is your younger brother, he's in grade 9, like Max and the others. Growing up between only guys was a strange experience to say the least. You sigh and let him continue whatever he was doing, giving him a suspicious look. He and the gang are always up to something.
'He hasn't seen Max.' You say, slapping your arms against your sides.
'Fuck it, she can never show up again for all I care.' He throws his hands in the air. He looks terribly stressed.
'Want to cool down for a second?' You ask while gesturing at the back door.

'She's 14 what is she going to do?' You say. You're sitting on a bench in the backyard. You have your knees tucked up under your shirt. You didn't put on a bra because you knew Steve would just take it off again.
Billy breathes out smoke, sitting back with his arm stretched out on the backbench, his fingers almost touching your back. 'She's probably out with Lucas somewhere.' He rubs his hand over his face.
You let out a laugh. 'Let her be, she's smart enough.'
You know he acts like he doesn't care about his step-sister but it clearly shows he does, in strange ways.
Your cat suddenly jumps up the bench, settling against Billy's thighs.
'A cat?' He says while looking at you.
You laugh at his dumbfounded expression. 'That's Obi, she's ours.'
'Hi, cat.' He pats her on the head. Suddenly an expression you've never seen before appears on Billy's face. He looks, content. It's almost endearing with how much care he's petting the cat. After a little more chit chat, you hear the backyard gate creak open, and Steve appears. With Billy showing up you completely forgot Steve was coming over.

Steve's smile quickly fades away when he realizes it's Billy who's sitting beside you.
'What is he doing here?' Steve says while coming closer, looking obviously very angry.
'Harrington! Always here to ruin the fun.' Billy smirks while sitting up straight, Obi jumping off the bench, startled by the sudden movement.
'Shit.' You whisper to yourself. You stand up. 'He was just looking for Max.' You try to explain, not knowing why you even should.
Steve holds his hand above his eyes, as if he's keeping out the sun and looks around the garden. 'Well I don't see her?' He says sarcastically.
'I can see myself out.' Billy says as he walks towards the gate, giving you a wink.
You see Steve tensing up even more.

'Why don't you trust me?' You yell at Steve, your fight has moved to the kitchen.
'I do! I just don't trust Billy! You know how he acts with girls.'
'Steve, he has been hanging around with us for 6 months and hasn't made any advantages towards me!'
'Oh that's not true! Are you blind?'
'What?' You calm down a little, genuinely surprised.
Steve combs with his hands through his hair. 'He looks at you, differently than at Kat or... or Polly. And that makes me fucking jealous!'
'That's bullshit.' You say, you see Chris peeking his head from around the corner.
'Do you mind?' You say as you pull Steve by his arm into the living room, you hear some creaking of the walkie-talkie as you close the door behind you.

You let yourself fall backwards on the couch and put your hands on your face.
Steve goes and sits on the coffee table opposite of you.
'Steve I don't know...' You sigh. 'We've been arguing so much lately.' You let your hands fall to the side.
'Isn't that what couples do?' He says lifting his head to the side a little. Man, he looked like a puppy sometimes.
You give him a sad smile. 'I guess so.' Not being fully convinced.
'I don't want to lose you over something stupid.' He holds your hands in his, caressing your hand with his thumb.
'I love you, Y/N.' His eyes meet yours. He has only said this once before, about a month ago when he was really drunk, but you thought he didn't mean it.
'Steve...'
His hopefulness disappears after the silence on your side. Your heart is pounding in your chest. You don't know what to say. Your relationship with Steve was pretty intense from the start and it feels like everything happened so fast. Now 7 months later you still don't know for sure if you indeed love him.
'It's okay.' He lets go of your hands and rubs his face.
After sitting in silence for a while he says: 'I better get going anyway.' He stands up.
'But you only just arrived?' You ask, making a weak attempt at making him stay.
'I know. I just want to be alone for a while.'
You walk towards the front door. 'Are you sure?' You ask him one more time.
He nods and gives you a peck on the cheek. You watch him walk away for a little before closing the door, standing in front of it for a while longer.

'He told me he loved me again.' You say through the phone while laying on bed.
'No way?' Kat answers.
'What did you say?' Polly asks. Thank god for 3 way phone calls.
'I didn't say anything.'
'Ouch.' Polly says.
You roll on your back. 'Yeah and even worse, Billy showed up at my house.'
'Billy? What did he want?' Kat says, jealousy showing in her voice.
You sigh. 'He was looking for Max.' You start playing with the phone cord.
Your older brother walks into your room.
'I have to go, talk to you guys later.' You hang up the phone.
'What the hell, Felix? Don't you knock?' You say agitated.
'I'm sorry I thought you wouldn't hear me over your "girl chat".'
'What do you want?'
'Nothing, I just heard your fight with Steve earlier.' His voice suddenly calming down.
You put your pillow on your face and grunt in it, frustrated you'll have to explain it again.
