This school day passed so quickly, contrary to yesterday. Everybody was excitedly chatting about prom all day. You heard some people talking about that they were going to vote for you and Steve. You were weirdly looking forward to prom, even though you were dreading being chosen as queen.
'You look great!' Kat claps in her hands as she's finishing putting on your eye shadow, you never wear much make-up but today was a special occasion.
'I've never thought the day would come I would see you in a dress.' Polly says to you smoking a cigarette through your window.
You look at yourself in the mirror. The dress is black, simple and long. It doesn't look like anything special but it hugged your curves the right way, and you must admit you look pretty damn fine.
'Are you sure I can't just wear my Dr Martens? No one will see my shoes anyway.'
'Are you mad?' Kat looks at you like you just offended her whole family. Fashion was really important in her books.
'Fine.' You sigh and put on some black boots with heels, which makes you look like a giant. You feel a little awkward standing on those boots, but they weren't that high and were relatively comfortable.Your dad catches a glimpse of you as he walks past your bedroom door. 'Look at my little girl.' He caresses your cheek. He looks at you for a second. 'I wish your mom could see you.'
'Me too, dad.' You say. He still gets tears in his eyes when he talks about your mom. You were driving back from your grandparents when you got in a car accident, you just turned 13. She and the driver from the other car didn't make it. Thankfully you and the rest of your family only got away with some scrams, but you lost someone very dear.
Polly tries to lighten the mood. 'Mr. Y/L/N would you like to take our picture?' And hands your dad an old Polaroid camera.
'Make three!' Kat says. You all do your best impression of models and look silly trying it. You shake the Polaroid until it's developed and put it on your wall next to some drawings and other pictures. You look fondly at the picture of you and your mom at the beach. You're standing downstairs, doing some last minute fixing to your hair and make-up.
'You can't ruin that dress on your motorcycle.' You hear your dad say as he holds up the keys to his 1955 Buick Roadmaster. 'Felix will drop you off. You won't want to be seen by your old man.' He smiles.
'Thanks dad!' You hug him tightly.
'Be careful!' Your dad says, throwing the keys to Felix.'Don't worry, I'll get home by myself.' You say as you step out of the car.
'Alright.' You hear Felix say as you throw the car door shut.
You walk into the gym that has been furiously decorated, with a "Spring Blossom" theme, which just means that everything was pink and covered in petals. Senior prom was here so soon, it seemed like you just started your freshman year here. I can't believe 4 years have gone by already. You're looking around when you see Steve putting his arm around a girl you don't recognize right away. He looks like he's using her to stand up straight, which is not really working. You narrow your eyes. As your walking closer, you see that the girl is Robin. You begin to release tension since they're friends but that doesn't make you feel less jealous.
'What the fuck is wrong with you?' You snap your fingers in front of Steve's face.
He has a grin on his face. 'Oh hello.' He starts giggling.
He points at you and looks at Robin. 'That's my girlfriend.'
'I am aware.' Robin says and puts Steve's other arm around your neck. He's now hanging between the two of you, not really putting any weight on his feet.
'Help me get him outside.' You say and you start to drag Steve towards the exit. You sit him down on a cinder block that holds the school's flag in it.
'How are you so drunk already?' You say as you let go of him. He does his best to sit up straight.
'They kept giving me tequila. And I liked it.'
Robin and you look at each other and laugh. She opens her purse and hands Stevea bottle of water.
'Drink.' She puts it at his lips. You are kind of taken aback by the way she handles Steve. Steve starts drinking greedily, a little water escaping from the corners of his mouth. He drinks the whole thing in one go.
'Thanks.' You say to Robin. She kindly smiles back.
You look around to see Billy and Tommy walk past on the parking lot. They're being really loud and Billy is holding a bottle of some kind of booze.
'Give me a second.' You say holding up one finger to Robin as you start speed walking towards the boys.
You stand in front of them, they both stop talking and Billy wipes the alcohol he spilt off of his chin.
'Why was Steve alone? And drunk?' You go straight to the point.
'He just left and I'm not his babysitter.' Tommy answers. 'Relax. He's fine!' He adds. As you look over, it looks like Steve is just laughing with Robin.
'Here.' Billy hands you the bottle of what seems to be cheap vodka. 'Take a swig.'
You take a big gulp. It burns all the way down your throat.
Billy flashes his white teeth as he gives a little smile. 'Good girl.'
You leave the boys to go on, to go back to Steve and Robin.
'I'll sit with him for a moment longer until he sobers up some more.' Robin offers. You are suspicious of the offer, but you want to go back inside, you've only been there for a moment.
'Alright, come find me if he's "normal" again.' You use air quotations and make Robin laugh.
You bend down to give Steve a quick peck on his cheek.
'Bye, bye.' You hear him slur when you walk off. You've found your friends again and have been dancing for a little while. Steve had already joined again and he was looking pretty okay, but still very much intoxicated.
'Oh, I love this song!' Polly says as "Dancing in the Dark" begins to play over the speakers. Mike grabs her hands and they start dancing together. Steve and Lewis are trying to reenact the dance moves Bruce Springsteen has in the music video. It's nice to see your friends have a good time, it has been a hard couple of months for everybody.
You get passed the bottle again that has been going around the group. You already start to feel drunk but you still take a sip.
Billy sticks a cigarette into his mouth and gestures to the exit. Universal sign language for "come smoke with me".
You look at Lewis and nod your head to the exit as well but he just shakes his head. You don't even bother asking Polly. You hand Kat the bottle and start following Billy outside. Not realizing how it may have looked going outside with him alone. You hear the song changing to "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" as you step outside. The air is nice and cool. There are only a couple of other people outside.
A group of girls start giggling. 'Hi Billy.' They all say in unison, one of them was Taylor from history class. The other ones you didn't know.
'Ladies.' He answers, accompanied by the signature Billy smile. You get a stern look from all the girls as they see you walking behind him. Hanging around with Billy sure hasn't given you any popularity with the girls at school.Billy doesn't stop walking until he reaches his car, parked on the side of the parking lot. When he turns around it is to sit on his hood. He puts one of his arms behind his back, leans on the windshield and lights the cigarette. He taps on the space next to him.
You awkwardly try to get on the hood without flashing everyone in the near vicinity.
Billy laughs. 'Y/N and dresses don't go together.'
'I know, but it's a special occasion.' You say struggling to find your pack of cigarettes in your jacket.
He hands you his cigarette and just lights a new one.
'Thanks.' You say while taking a drag. You blow out smoke watching it evaporate into the night sky. 'Prom is so stupid.'
'Need to get back soon, won't want to miss your crowning.' Billy says staring at the entrance of the gym. You can faintly hear some music coming from inside.
'Some people act like you become real royalty.' You answer.
Billy chuckles. He's almost more relaxed when he is around you. It's strange because you're both riled up people, but you find comfort in each others madness.
You two sit in silence for a while. You go and sit a little straighter and lean on your arm, looking at Billy. He looks lost in thoughts. You can never seem to figure him out, probably no one can. There's so much anger, but also so much sadness, he seems to be able to only express one though. There are so many things that push you away but then again, so many that draw you towards him. When he takes a drag from his cigarette it lights his face up a little. You see Billy suddenly smirk.'What the fuck?' You hear, getting ripped out of your thoughts and sit up straight. Billy just keeps still, he saw him coming.
'What do you want, Harrington?' Billy says as he throws his cigarette on the ground.
'What the fuck are you doing with my girlfriend, again?' Steve almost screams.
Billy slides of his hood. You get off as well, not as smoothly.
Steve is in Billy's face at this point.
'Back the fuck off, Casanova.' Billy says as he pushes him away lightly with one finger on his chest.
You walk around the car to Steve, pull on his arm and he almost falls backwards. Since he's so drunk he can't hold his balance.
'Get your shit straight.' You say between your teeth as you're now the one who's getting closer. You're now trapped between two cars, with Billy behind, and Steve in front of you.
'Why are you here alone with him again?' Steve yells at you, slurring his words a little bit.
'Smoking a fucking cigarette, what does it look like?' You yell back.
Steve is standing with his mouth open, as to say something but nothing comes out. He looks so confused.
'I'm done.' He says as he holds his hands up, walking back towards the gym.
You kick a can that is laying on the ground nearby. 'Why is he so fucking jealous?' You put your hands in your hair.
Billy sighs. 'He is in fact your boyfriend.' He says with another cigarette hanging from his lips.
'Fuck.' You say as you lean on the car again. You don't know how to handle yourself anymore. Let alone handle Steve.
'Don't get in a relationship.' You say as you finally find your cigarettes.
'It's not my style anyway.' He says nonchalantly.
