Asgard
Loki let the swirling of the Tesseract time traveling dry his tears as he approached Asgard (he arrives a few days after Captain America has returned the Ether). He is going to see his mother again!
Using the Tesseract, Heimdal cannot see Loki. Loki instead, transports himself right into his mother's anti chambers. His mother isn't there, so Loki covers himself with invisibility and creeps out into the Asgardian marble hallway.
Two guards walk by him and Loki waves at them. They don't see him. He walks past the throne room and spots his father, looking out into the universe from the magical throne. Loki stops and stares. Apparently, he was going to magic his father and rule Asgard for eight years. He could do that now, but he knows it would feel like ruling a book. You already know what's going to happen.
Then he heard women's voices down the hallway. He turned and smiled. His mother, accompanied by another woman with long brown hair, were walking down the hall, chatting.
"Thor is headstrong, but he is sweet at the core," Frigga was saying. Loki scowled. Who would actually WANT to talk about his oaf brother?
"I'm thankful he did everything he could to get the Ether out of me, but it's so weird that a racoon would appear out of nowhere, stab me, take it, and later, Captain America, comes and returns it," the other woman says. With shock, Loki realizes the young woman is mortal.
"Jane, my dear," Frigga says, "some things happen because of fate. And somethings happen because it must. At least we don't have to figure out how to get it out of you and safe."
At that moment, they walked by Loki and Frigga glanced to the side. Loki froze. The two women walked by. Loki followed.
"But what about the dark elves?" Jane asks.
"Don't worry about them. With the Ether stored away, they've gone back into hibernation. They probably won't reawake in your life time. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some matters to attend to. I'll see you again dear."
The two women parted and Frigga turned and stared straight at Loki.
"Loki..." she said slowly.
Loki dropped his guise. He took a step forward, tears in his eyes. "Mother," he choked out. "I'm so sorry for everything, so much has happened!"
Frigga shushed him with a hug and held Loki in a loving embrace for a long minute. She smelled slightly of magic and flowers. Loki breathed in her scent and tucked away the memory in his mind.
When they finally drew away, Loki started to pour out his heart, but Frigga shushed him again.
"Don't tell me about the future," she said.
"But you don't understand," Loki said, "You-"
"Shhhh shush," Frigga said seriously.
Loki sighed. This is what his brother was talking about. He would try harder.
"Mother, I want you to come with me," Loki finally said.
Frigga smiled. "You know I can't do that Loki."
"Why not?" Loki whined.
Frigga sighed. "Please drop that little disguise of yours, I can't talk to you when you're like that."
"It's not a disguise," Loki muttered, but he had had this argument with Frigga many times.
"Making yourself appear the same age as Thor is a fraud and makes you underappreciate yourself. I love you as you are and I don't like speaking to fake versions."
"Fine..." Loki gave in and dropped the small touches on his body that made him appear older.
"There you go," Frigga said. "Anyway, what I was saying, is that I belong here in my timeline, just like you belong in your timeline."
"I don't like staying in things," Loki muttered. "I like change. And anyway, in this timeline," he held his arms up, "I'm dead."
Frigga gasped and jumped a little, her hand coming to cover her mouth. Then that emotion cleared from her face and was replaced by her former resolve.
"We all belong in our own timeline," she said sternly.
"But Thor's timeline is different than mine!" Loki whined again.
"Is there not a Thor in your timeline?" Frigga asked.
"Well, there is... but not the real Thor!"
"We're all real," Frigga countered.
"What about the Loki rotting in the dungeons now?" Loki asked ruthlessly.
Frigga tightened her lips. "I'm sorry Loki. I'm sure you won't spend your whole life there."
"Did Captain America put the Ether back into Jane?" Loki asked, his brain making connections.
"No, of course not. His conscience wouldn't let him infect an innocent girl with something that might kill her or many people. He gave it back to us and we hid it again. Now the dark elves have to wait till the next aligning, which isn't for centuries."
"That's all good and everything, but now I won't get out of prison," Loki thought to himself, but didn't say it aloud.
"Is it okay if I visit you?" Loki asked, "in this timeline?"
"How exactly are you visiting me anyway? Why didn't you come with Thor a few days ago?" Frigga asked suspiciously.
"Uh... Magic?"
Frigga didn't look convinced, but she let it drop. "No, you shouldn't visit me," she said, though it was clear that sentence pained her, "you can't keep living in the past."
"I won't live here though," Loki protested, "I'll just visit. Unless you come with me..."
"No. Your father needs me." Frigga said sternly.
"Father doesn't have very long!" Loki shouted and immediately regretted it by the look on his Mother's face.
"What did I say about talking about the future?" she asked angrily.
"Sorry," Loki apologized, "but it's not like you didn't know that already."
Frigga sighed. "I know more than you think Loki, even if I haven't actively visited the future, I see it often."
Loki sighed. "I don't know what to do anymore mother. I don't know who I am."
"You," Frigga said warmly, "are my son."
