THE NEXT AFTERNOON, Rory sat in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom of Hogwarts. This was easily one of her favorite subjects and she just hoped that the Ministry's new pet wouldn't ruin it for her. As Rory's day went on, she realized her and Harry shared every class together, except for the electives she took and he didn't, or vise versa.

Harry had opted to sit next to her, but Rory didn't mind. She sent him a smile, "Did you know that Dolores means sorrows in Latin? I wonder if it's a foreshadow for how this class is going to go."

Harry chuckled, "I wouldn't be surprised, especially with how the Ministry is ignoring everything going on." And Rory shrugged, "Well if I get in trouble with her today, I won't be the only one on a professor's bad side. We all know what happened between you and Professor Snape today —"

"Shh, don't talk about that."

Rory laughed just as there was a small, "Hem, hem" from the back of the classroom. She rolled her eyes, already knowing it was Professor Umbridge.

"Well, good afternoon. . . . Tut, tut, that won't do, now, will it? I should like you, please, to reply Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge. One more time please. Good afternoon, class!"

And just like she had instructed, the whole class chanted back, "Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge." Except Rory, who spoke nothing.

"I believe there was someone I didn't hear," Professor Umbridge found Rory, pointing at her, "You, dear. Was it you?"

"Me?"

"Yes you," the professor confirmed, and Rory looked beside her at Harry, "Did you hear me, Harry?" And he nodded, "I thought I did."

Rory turned back to Professor Umbridge, "I'm sorry, Professor. I'll speak louder next time, I promise." And she smiled, "It's alright, dear. I thank you for clarifying, Miss —?"

"Oh, sorry. Aurora Kennedy."

How fun it was to see her professor's eyes widen in realization, to see the pieces click together in her head as she told her her name. Sol Kennedy was a powerful man at the Ministry who had a lot of connections, and everyone wanted to be on his good side. And how badly Dolores Umbridge wanted to be at his right hand.

But some things don't work out. Maybe it was for the better, and it probably was.

"Alright," Professor Umbridge cleared her throat, breaking her eye contact with Rory. "Wands away and quills out, please."

She began to copy her various course aims onto chalkboard and asked all of her students to copy it down word-for-word. Rory, who wasn't in the mood for writing or doing any schoolwork, made her quill write it for her. If needed however, she could still make it look like she was doing it herself.
