"𝙄'𝙢 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮," he says into my hair, "𝙄'𝙢 𝙨𝙤 𝙨𝙤 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮." The sound of his voice breaking causes the tears to finally fall.
"You came back," I sigh into his chest. He pulls away, holding my face in his hands, and my heart flutters...

"Lily!" Diana cheered, embracing me in a warm hug, "it's good to have you back. Are you okay from yesterday?" I stared at her and Anne, the only other people, besides Gilbert, that seemed to care about me. My best friends.
"I'm fine Diana," I replied, "just needed some time, that's all."
"Oh good," Anne perks up and leads me to our seat, "if you've got time after school, I've been dying to show you something!"
"Oh, okay," I laugh lightly, "I'll um, have to check with my parents first." She nodded in understanding. Within seconds Mr. Philips had entered the classroom, the very sight of him causing my blood to boil furiously.
"Alright class, let's begin," he drones, making grueling eye contact with me, "looks like only one of our two runaways has returned from yesterday's events." Alerted by his statement I look over to Gilbert's seat. Empty.
I keep my head down, avoiding the eyes that followed Philip's comment. The minutes drone on once again as I am lost in the endless void of schoolwork.
The door burst open, sending a rush of cold air from the snowy environment outside.
"I stand corrected," Mr. Philips teased.
"My apologies sir," Gilbert addresses and takes his seat, noticeably out of breath. I can't help but cast my gaze upon him. He's flustered, having probably run all the way to school. I remember yesterday and how he was so different from the way he was now. Now he was distraught. We then fall back into the lecturing from Mr. Philips as we aimlessly copied down what he wrote on the board.
But then the rhythm is broken by a piece of paper, one that just so happened to land on Anne's desk.
"I think this is for you," Anne whispers with a smile. She hands me the note in secret as if Mr. Philips was at the top of my worries at the moment.
Lunch?
What I'm truly worried about, however, is Gilbert Blythe

"Are you coming with the girls and us to eat lunch?" Diana asks me as we're being dismissed.
"Uh... maybe in a minute I—there's something I have to do first," I brush off earning a nod from Diana.
"This wouldn't have anything to do with Gilbert now, would it?" She teases, making a blush appear on my cheek without warning. I open my mouth to protest but Anne does the job for me.
"Oh, stop it Diana," Anne giggles, teasing me more than her, "Lily would never fraternize with the infamously handsome Gilbert Blythe!"
"Would you two quit!" I whisper-yell trying to hide my embarrassment, "he's my best friend." The two girls just stare at me disbelieving smirks ever-present on their faces.
