"You're a WHAT?!" Allura screamed.
Keith sat uncomfortably, looking down at his fidgeting hands, while Lance sat by his side with his arm around Keith's shoulders.
"I'm half galra, half human." he explained a second time.
"And you can just.... switch between the two?!"
"I can, but... naturally I'm somewhere in the middle." Keith spoke softly. "I think my pills may have thrown off my chemistry or something, and that's why I look mostly human right now."
Allura pinched the bridge of her nose. "Oh, this is just- wait. Show me."
Keith looked up. "Show you...?"
"Show me how you can shift between looking human and looking Galra."
"Uh..." Keith groaned nervously. "I mean... I can try?" With that, he held his breath, pinched his eyes shut, and clenched his fists. He focused his mind on what a galra looked like. Mostly, he thought of is mom. At first, nothing happened. But slowly, starting at his cheeks and hands, his skin took on a more lilac color, and his ears became pointed. He gasped, opening his eyes, and the irises were now a dark golden color. "Did it work?"
"Yeah, kinda!" Lance said. "You don't look completely galra, but I can definitely see it now."
Allura shuddered slightly. "Coran, I'm going to need a DNA analysis, quickly." She said into the castle intercom.
"Right-o, Princess!" Coran replied.
Within a minute, Coran was in the room, Pidge by his side with a needle and collection tube in hand.
"We'll just need a little blood sample!" Pidge said happily. Clearly, she was excited about this.
"I'm not letting you stick me with that thing." Keith objected.
"Oh, come on, it's just a little pinch! Just roll up your sleeve and..." Coran reached for Keith's arm.
Keith jumped up, slapping Coran's hand away. "Don't touch me!" He said, almost sounding offended.
Pidge sprinted towards him. "Don't be such a baby!"
Keith retreated, and soon Pidge and Coran were chasing him in circles around the room, shouting at him to cooperate as he continued to shout objections.
Lance and Allura both sighed at this childish display. Allura put a hand on Lance's shoulder and leaned towards him.
"I couldn't help but notice," she whispered, "that you and he have grown quite close." She subtly pointed in Keith's direction.
Lance's face became flushed red. "What the-" he stammered. "Whatever Pidge told you-" he whispered.
"Pidge didn't tell me anything." She assured him.
Lance sighed. "It's that obvious, is it?"
"Lance," her tone became grave. "Regardless of what you may feel, or even what he may feel... this is dangerous."
"What are you saying?"
"Even if he's not fully galra, he may not be trustworthy. What I'm saying is, be careful. Don't do anything stupid because of him." She pulled away and swiftly turned towards the commotion, which had escalated into a wrestling match of Pidge and Coran versus Keith. "Now," she sighed. "IF YOU THREE WOULD PLEASE STOP ACTING LIKE CHILDREN!"
The three froze and looked up at her from the floor, before untangling themselves and standing in a row obediently. Pidge and Coran looked at the ground, ashamed, but Keith just crossed his arms, looking slightly annoyed.
Pidge was the first to speak. "Sorry... if you really hate needles that much, I guess we can do a spit test."
"That's fine," Keith said.
One saliva sample and a varga later, and it was confirmed that Keith was 50/50 human and galra. After learning this information, Allura's demeanor towards him seemed to shift slightly. She didn't glare at him half as much as before. She didn't require Lance watch him quite as closely, to the point where he almost had free rein in the castle. Since his ankle was healing quickly, he mostly used this newfound freedom to work out in the training room. A few quintants passed, and she said his name for the first time.
She stood in the doorway of the training room, watching him as he caught his breath from yet another duel against the gladiator. She hesitated, before taking a few steps towards him. "Keith," she said, a slight edge of nervousness leaking through.
"What's up?" he said casually. He was much less scared of her now.
She paused, choosing her words carefully. "I have noticed... you and Lance... seem to be... close?"
He fixed his posture and pushed his hair out of his face. "Yeah, I like him a lot, actually." He knew that was an understatement, but he didn't want to tell Allura just how much he liked him.
"As do I," she said, avoiding eye contact. "You know... he and the other paladins, they are... like my family. I want what's best for them."
"That makes sense, I guess...?"
"Anyways, uh... Keith..." she approached him slowly, taking a sharp breath in before slowly breathing out.
"What's... up...?" He asked nervously. He felt like the tension in the room could be cut with his blade.
Aggressively, she grabbed his shoulder. "If... if you hurt him..." her voice was shaking. "I mean... I won't hesitate to do whatever it takes to protect him. Do you... do you understand?" Finally, she looked him in the eyes. Keith could see that in her eyes were tears of anger, or fear, he wasn't quite sure. She was being genuine, and, to his own surprise, he could empathize with her. "If you really care about him, then promise me. Promise you won't do anything to hurt him."
He nodded. "I promise," he said softly.
Allura let go of his shoulder, took a few steps back, and looked down. "Thank you." The words were barely a whisper. She took another deep, shaking breath before swiftly leaving the room.
Keith stood in silence, contemplating the past five minutes. He sighed, and headed for Lance's room.

A.N.: First, I want to thank everyone for voting and commenting, y'all are great! Second, JESUS CHRIST ALLURA IS HARD TO WRITE! I wanted to challenge myself, though, and give her some attention, cause I think she needed some development. In a lot of these Galra Keith AU fics, she's either really nice to Keith or really hostile. I'm really trying hard to put her in the middle, and make her more realistic. I'm trying to convey someone who's scared, kind of prejudiced, but really only wants what's best for her family. And in case anyone was confused about the timeline, this takes place pre-season 7. That's all, thank you!
