31: CHAPTER THIRTY-ONEI TWIRL around in the mirror so my dress swishes around my knees. My blonde hair is curled to perfection and I make sure not to mess it up as I reach for a black headband and place it atop of my head. So far, so good. Although it seems far fetched, I'm hoping this night goes well.
"Which shade matches my skin tone best?" Crystal lifts two identical red lipsticks.
"Mm..." Makayla tilts her head and squints her eyes. "The left one."
Crystal nods and coats her mouth with the one Makayla picked out for her. She is seated on my bed with a compact mirror lifted at her face. Makayla is wrestling into a pair of white stockings; which she's wearing underneath a billowy, pink skirt and a black t shirt. She has a rose, see-through scarf draped around her neck and her dark hair is pinned up into a ponytail.
Crystal had offered to come over and help me get ready, not that I needed much help anyway. I hadn't turned down the offer, though. I have started to forget what it feels like to enjoy yourself around female company. I've only surrounded myself by guys for the last few months, ranging from Josh, Adrian, Ethan, my father, and even Martin. Phoebe unfortunately couldn't make it, something about her grandmother being ill.
I eye my svelte figure in the mirror and smooth down my dress. I step into my heels and wobble my way to the dresser. Crystal wolf whistles then. "Ethan is gonna jizz his pants when he sees you."
I feel myself blush. "Crystal!" I sigh at the same time Makayla screeches "Shut it, Crystal!"
"Have you guys...done it?" Crystal cups her face with her hands and grins, revealing her pearly whites.
"Crystal!" Makayla scolds again and hits her arm.
Crystal giggles. "What? I'm curious."
I set my curling iron down on the nightstand and flick off the switch. "No," I say with a sigh. "We're both virgins."
Crystal's sitting up straighter and her grin is gone. "No?"
I touch the necklace that Ethan gave to me and seat myself down on the bed in front of them. "Yeah."
"I swear he isn't," Crystal mutters and taps a slender finger to her chin.
Makayla shifts uneasily. I eye them both. "What're you talking about?"
Crystal shrugs. "I remember once at a party—I believe it was in Year 10—, when Ethan and this girl both came down the stairs and we all thought they had sex. I mean, they looked like they had sex. His hair was messy and she reeked of it," she tells me. "And all his friends were cheering him on because he had a crush on her for the longest. I don't remember her name but I'm pretty sure I can point her out on Tuesday. If you want."
