32: CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

"CAN I check something on your phone?"

I take my phone out of my pocket and slap it onto Ethan's palm. He leans against the locker and starts to type. I wait by him, peering anxiously to see what he's doing. He's taking a while and it's making me paranoid.

"Are you done?" I clear my throat.

"Just a second," he said, holding a finger up.

I tie my hair up in a ponytail as I await for him to finish whatever it is that he's doing. At last, he gives me my phone back and I slip it into my back pocket. "So," I start as we both head down the hallway. His arm is around me. "What did you do?"

"I checked the school website. I have a Saturday detention," he says as he guides me down the hallway.

"Huh?" I exclaim. "What'd you do?"

He only chuckles. "Don't worry about it." That's all he contributes to the conversation. I'm dying to know, but then I realise that Ethan can be quite shady when he wants to be.

"Okay," I murmur and lean against the door.

"Looks nice," he tells me and tugs at the end of my ponytail.

"Thanks," I say and run a hand through my hair.

"I wanted to talk to you about something," he adopts a serious tone. He turns so he's facing me completely.

This makes me frown. "About what?"

He's unconsciously playing with the ends of my hair when he speaks. "About Sunday. This Sunday."

I'm about to ask him what's this Sunday when it hits me. Josh's party. "What about it?"

Ethan isn't looking at me as he toys with my ponytail. "I don't think we should go." I open my mouth to speak but he beats me to it. "I know what you're going to say: no, Ethan, I want to be with my lover. Please, only an hour tops," he mocks my American accent.

I scoff. "I don't sound like that," I protest.

"You do, actually," he replies.

"Stop changing the subject. Why don't you want to go?"

He exhales. "Give me one good reason why I should go."

I tilt my head to the side and try a smile. "It'll make me happy?"

He scoffs. "Not good enough." In response, I slap his shoulder and he grins. "Nah, but seriously."
