50: CHAPTER FIFTY
I HAVE NEVER turned around so fast in my life and bolted. I just needed to get the hell out of there and process what I've just seen. Ethan and Lila. Ethan and a pregnant Lila. Ethan and—
"Uh, uh, uh!" I hear Ethan's voice call from behind me. "You don't get to walk away, not after your little stunt back there!"
I come to a screeching halt in the middle of the stairs and then swing around harshly to face him. He's standing a few steps above me, his hands in his pockets and his face set in a scowl. His lips are smudged with Lila's lipstick. "My little stunt?" My chest is heaving and it's a hard task keeping the tears at bay. "So now this is my fault?"
Ethan takes another step. He's still standing above me on the steps, like he's afraid I'll lash out at him if he gets even closer. "Nah, everything's always my fault isn't it?" His eyes are narrowed coldly at me. This is not the same guy I fell for. "I know about the bet."
I can feel my face scrunch up. "What bet?" I'm astounded by the amount of stupidity a human can hold.
"Crystal told me earlier on." He jabs a thumb over his shoulder. His voice sounds devoid of emotion, like he's washed his hands from me. "You got paid to ask me to the dance."
There is no humour in the laugh I let out. "That's why you were upset?"
He shakes his head. "You got paid three hundred bucks to ask me out. Here I was thinking you actually wanted to go out with me..." He looks over his shoulder at Lila, who's peering at the both of us curiously. He starts to rummage through his pocket, pulling out a set of keys. "Here, go wait for me in the car."
She reaches to grab for the keys and begins to waddle down the steps. I glare at her short figure until she's out of sight, then I look back at Ethan. "You think this is a bet?" He doesn't say anything, just continues glaring at me like I'm the gum stuck to the back of his shoe, so I further on, "I asked you out because I love you, you moron. Not for the money. That was just an added bonus."
He laughs dryly. "An added bonus?" He's smiling in a humourless fashion. "Are you listening to yourself right now?"
"Ethan, it's not like that." I shake my head and take a little step closer. "You know I'd never do that to you. I was so happy to go to the dance with you, and now you ruined it! You always ruin things, Ethan. That's all you ever fucking do."
