AURORA'S ALARM woke her up bright and early the next morning. She excitedly hopped out of bed and into the shower. She was excited for the day, excited to meet her new friends, and excited to see more of Forks than just her aunt's house.
Aurora scrunched products into her wavy hair and did her makeup. She filled in her brows, applied a coat of mascara, and smeared on chapstick. Aurora placed a set of golden hoops into her ears, stepping back from the mirror and assessing herself.
"Hot, Rory. Now for the outfit," Aurora skipped back to her room and rummaged through her closet until she found the perfect outfit. She decided on high waisted light wash mom jeans, a white long sleeve shirt, and her white Doc Martens. She adorned herself with gold necklaces and bracelets, and sprayed herself with perfume. Aurora stepped back and assessed her overall look.
"Rory, you aren't even giving these people a chance, you sexy mama!" Aurora said to herself. She looked cute and she knew it. Feeling confident, Aurora hopped down the stairs and poured herself some cereal.
"So, the school is a bit of a drive, like I said," Parker was saying as Aurora ate her Cocoa Crispies cereal. "I'm gonna have to drive you until we get this car situation sorted out."
"Okay, thanks. I might need an umbrella, though," Aurora said as she glanced out the window at the rain. It hadn't stopped all night.
"I have a ton, so you can just pick whichever one you want," Parker said, shrugging.
"Thanks a million. No, thanks a billion!" Aurora grinned up at her aunt.
"You're welcome a trillion. Now go brush your teeth, we gotta get a move on."
Ten minutes later, Aurora and Parker were out the door. Aurora wasn't sure what kind of clothes people in Forks wore, so she was a little worried her outfit might stand out. These worries were quickly brushed away when she remembered she always stood out, it was her personality. Plus, she looked good. She was meant to stand out.
"Silly Rory," she chuckled to herself. She looked cute and she knew it.
Parker was right, they did live quite a bit of a ways out of town and away from the school. But with Parker's extremely fast (and reckless) driving, the school quickly came up in Aurora's sights. She could see people milling about the parking lot since the rain had stopped temporarily. As she drew nearer, she noticed how pale everyone was and prayed she didn't lose her tan she earned from the hot days in Miami.
Just as Aurora said her goodbyes to her aunt and stepped out of the car, the clouds parted and the sun peeked through. What are the chances of that? Aurora wondered to herself. Aurora's timing: One. Everyone else: Zero.
"Who's that?" She heard someone whisper under their breath as she walked into the parking lot. Heads turned to look at the tanned beauty, and Aurora walked past everyone, trying to ooze confidence and grace. If you trip, Rory, I'm gonna kill you, Aurora thought to herself.
"Hey, hey, who're you?" A voice asked, hopping right in front of Aurora. Aurora stopped to a halt and looked up at her roadblock. It was a tall white boy with messy blond curls and a charming smile. He was kind of cute, Aurora noted.
"Aurora Ausín, and you?" Aurora asked, holding out her hand for him to shake. She thanked God that she'd made a friend already. Well, hopefully he was a friend.
"Kaleb, Kaleb Trainor. Pleasure to meet you," The boy, Kaleb, said, grinning as he shook her hand.
"Pleasure's all mine," Aurora said back. "We're buddies now."
Kaleb laughed. "Sounds good to me. Come meet my friends."
Aurora followed Kaleb to a group of kids who looked her age, very aware of everyone else in the parking lot talking about her. It was weird—Aurora wasn't used to a whole parking lot talking about her. Maybe she shouldn't have worn such a nice outfit.
