"URGH!" AURORA SHRIEKED in frustration. She had been trying—unsuccessfully—for over half an hour to try to mind connect to Jared like she had done twice before. She wanted to go to the Rez since she had promised Billy she would go if the Cullens ever bothered her again. However, her lack of transportation was prohibiting her from doing just that. She and Parker had yet to go car shopping.

"Come on, necklace! I just wanna talk to Jared," Aurora whined. "This is stupid."

The doorbell breaking the steady silence startled Aurora. She jumped ten feet out of her skin, squawking like a bird. She stood, cautiously made her way to the door and opened it up, revealing a suave looking Edward.

"Do you need a ride?" He asked.

"Why are you doing this?" Aurora asked, breaking the heavy silence. For the past five minutes, the only sound had been the steady hum of his Volvo.

"I know you feel safe with them. And I know you need to talk to them," Edward stated, his eyes never leaving the road.

"How's Emmett?" Aurora asked after a moment of silence.

Edward frowned. "He's... he's handling things." Aurora didn't want to know what that meant.

"How are you and Bella?" Aurora asked. This question broke Edward's stern gaze and he glanced at her quickly before returning his eyes back to the road.

"We're fine. Why wouldn't we be?"

"You're scared of how you could hurt her." Aurora stated. Edward looked over at her and frowned.

Edward slowed and pulled over to the side of the road. He stared ahead in silence for a moment before looking over at Aurora. "Come with me."

She followed him out of the car and into the woods. Luckily, the skies had cleared. Well, it had stopped raining. It was still overcast. Aurora couldn't help feeling afraid and cautious, like she should be running in the opposite direction. This feeling—as much as she tried to shake it—followed her whenever she was with the Cullens. She never felt truly safe around them. It was human nature—they were predators and she was their prey.

"You're incredibly perceptive," Edward said after they had walked for a few minutes. "If you were to be turned, I'm sure that would be your gift."

"Thank you. I can read minds," Aurora waggled her eyebrows and laughed. A shadow of a smile flashed across Edward's lips.

"Have you told Bella?" Edward asked, with a hint of emotion in his voice. "That now I'm afraid?" It took Aurora a few seconds to realize just how worried he was. And vulnerable. He didn't want to hurt Bella, but even more, he didn't want her to know he was afraid of hurting her. He wanted her to feel safe around him.

"No," Aurora said softly. "And I won't. You can trust me."

Edward nodded solemnly. Aurora was silent a moment. "I'm sorry, Edward."

Edward paused his walking and turned to Aurora. His brows were creased. "For what?"

"For everything. Bella really isn't too bad. I wish I hadn't been such a bitch to you." Aurora couldn't meet Edward's piercing gaze. She truly felt remorse and guilt. They had once been so close, and she let a girl get between their friendship. Aurora felt like she would regret it all her life.

"No. I'm sorry."

Aurora looked up, and this time Edward was avoiding her gaze, not the other way around. "What? For what?"

"I let you push me away. I was unnecessarily rude and mean to you. I attacked you." Edward's voice faltered on that last sentence. His topaz eyes looked up and met Aurora's dark ones. "I attacked you." His voice was hardly a whisper.
