Noah leaned back on the bedframe, Carrie sitting beside him as they both watched Jaws on the TV. Noah groaned as the shark leapt up and attacked someone else, putting his hand to his head.
"What's wrong with you?" Carrie looked at him, noticing he wasn't paying attention.
"It's just... can you even consider this a movie? It's a documentary!"
"No, it's a movie."
"Documentary!"
"Movie!"
"Documentary!"
"Movie!"
"It's a documentary, there were shark attacks all along the west coast last year!"
"I thought you didn't watch movies..."
"I read the news, I'm not that clueless."
"It's a movie though, a documentary is just an informational movie. Plus, how do you know what a documentary even is?"
"I'm a smart kid Carrie, just cause I've never seen a movie doesn't mean I'm a complete dumbass."
"Well, it's a movie, those shark attacks are exaggerated like all those crazy kill movies like Nightmare on Elm Street-," Carrie covered her mouth at what she just said. That was the first thing she thought of and it slipped out without second thought. She turned to Noah, looking down at the bed.
"Noah, I'm sorry, it just slipped out!"
"Carrie...look, I want you to know something-,"
"I'm so sorry! Look, I know you're not your dad and all but-," Noah put his finger to her lips.
"Be quiet for a minute, I want to speak." Carrie nodded her head.
"I want you to know, I'm not mad when you talk about my father's movies. What he did was horrible, the only thing I hate is when people associate me with him... Don't you hate when people associate you with your dad?"
"Oh, of course, he was a weird kid... he has an alligator..."
"See, I'm the same way. I don't want people to think of me as a murderer, but as... a friend, or just another person. I'm not the kid of Jason Vorhees or Hannibal Lecter, I don't want that. I want to go my own way, pave my path, sorry it's cheesy I know-,"
"No, it's not, I get it." Carrie leaned her head on his shoulder.
"You do?"
"Yeah, I don't wanna be an Addams for the rest of my life. Do I enjoy it? Yeah, but you know, Carrie Addams sounds... generic."
"Carrie Krueger sounds nice though..." Noah muttered under his breath as Carrie looked up at him.
"What?"
"N-Nothing," He looked over at her as she cuddled her head into his neck. He turned red as he felt her breath on his neck.
"I should've been with Mike..." Carrie whispered as Noah intently watched the TV.
"Honestly, what did he do to become your ex?"
"He used me for cheating on his test."
"Wow," Noah looked at her, "why would he use such an amazing girl for such a low thing?"
"Cause he's an asshole?"
"Obviously," Noah looked away, "even I know better than to do that."
"You shouldn't say that..."
"Why?"
"His mom is the chief of police..."
"What's her name?"
"Chief Hopper..."
"Oh," Noah looked at her, "then why don't you just turn Mike in?"
"Cause then I'd get in trouble cause his parents think he's an angel, not to mention with you around..."
"I'm a burden, I know, you don't have to remind me." Noah felt his heart ache slightly as he said that, he bit his lip as his eyes filled with tears. Why was he crying? He had no idea.
"You aren't a burden Noah, never forget that I care about you more than you could ever imagine." Noah watched as Carrie closed her eyes and drifted off. He looked away as tears fell down his face.
"I'm sorry Daddy! I didn't want to be a b-burden to you!" Noah looked up from the mess he'd made on the bathroom floor, his father looking down at him. He always looked up to his dad, because that was all he had there for him.
"Oh, my little boy," His father came down to his side, wrapping his crying son in a hug, "you are not a burden Noah... please, do not forget that I care about you no matter what."
And now, thirteen years later, Noah was hiding from his own dad.
