After we got to the end of the street Spencer let go of my hand and I breathed a silent sigh of relief. My face would have been bright red the whole entire time if he hadn't of let go.
As we walked down the streets and into town we made small talk. He was the one who did all the talking. I concluded that he talked a lot when he was nervous. He talked about school, the teachers, his friends, a duck, some sheep, and an apple orchard that we passed, I learned his favorite flavor of ice cream, why Sam hates him so much, his past pets, some more ducks and - well you get it.
So far I learned that...the school was pretty small and didn't have very many people in it, the teachers were all old and mean (except a few,) he had two really good friends, James and Kyle, (I made a joke about how they did start with S and he just laughed,) ducks quack, they have sheep races, the apple orchard was about 100 years old, favorite flavor was vanilla, Sam hates him because...well just because, he had a dog named Effie, did he mention that ducks quacked?
"So as I passed this duck in the park it was all like -"
"Spencer," I cut him off. "It said quack. I get it. We're in town now...so can I tell you something about me?"
He smiled sheepishly. "Yeah, the ice cream shop is right down here. Come on."
I followed him down the street for another minute until we reached the shop. We held the door for me as we walked inside. He ordered a vanilla (of course) and he bought me a strawberry cheesecake flavor.
We picked a table outside and started talking again, except it was me who did most of the conversation since Spencer got over his nerves and now he could barely utter a single word.
"So do you have any hobbies?" Spencer asked.
"I like to read. Wait is that a hobby? Um...I collect stamps? Wait no! I used to dance." I took a spoonful of ice cream and shoved it in my mouth before I embarrassed myself even more.
He chuckled. "Well you certainly have a dancer’s body."
I choked on my ice cream and Spencer’s eyes widened as he realized what he said.
"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry! I didn't mean it like that...well I did...but um...yeah. Never mind."
I chuckled and watched Spencer squirm as he tried to think of what to talk about.
"What classes are you going to take?" He asked hesitantly.
"I don't know really. My mom was going to go out this weekend and register me. Say...can you or Septimus drive?"
He nodded. "Yeah we both can. Can you drive? And why do you ask? Need a ride to school?"
I blushed, overwhelmed by all of his questions. "Yes I would like a ride. And well yes I can drive very well but parallel parking is my weakness. During my first test I drove all the way up on the sidewalk. It was terrible. I try to avoid driving and parking as much as possible."
By the end of my story Spencer was laughing. "All the way on the curb huh?
My cheeks burned even more. “Shut up, I can’t park at all. And in my defense I was really nervous and the guy smelled really bad and he kept checking is teeth in the mirror and he kept calling me ‘sweetheart’ and ‘sugar.” I shivered at the memory. “That guy was creepy and all I wanted to do was get out of there. So technically by messing it up I got out of there quicker and I’ve never been back to that place since.”
