epilogue
if yoongi had been in a fanfiction, maybe he would have been happier. maybe they would kiss. maybe, they'd run towards each other and yoongi would finally remember the way jungkook smelt, and feel his muscles under his hands and run his fingers through his hair.
if yoongi had been in a fanfiction, he wouldn't feel the iron hand of fear clamp its claw around his heart and it thudded wildly in his chest. perhaps, in some alternate universe, they would never have had to separate the way they did.
brutally. painfully.
jungkook's eyes blinked once. twice. as if the name had escaped his mouth on instinct, as if his soul had found what it had searched to blindly for after he was left alone.
"jungkook."
but it wasn't a question: yoongi's lips pressed together in a thin line, gauging the other's movements carefully, "how are you?"
calm. calm and stoic. the only two things that yoongi could force himself to become. he felt the brick wall around his heart stand tall like a prison, ignoring the wails of his heart from within the abyss of darkness he had created. he knew how weak his walls were though, one gentle, loving brush from jungkook would bring him to his knees - literally.
"i'm good." jungkook's voice sounded strained even to himself. he willed himself to stay still, tied a leash over his desires and shot them down. yoongi probably didn't want him anyway. cold. cold and stoic. this was the only thing he had taught himself to do after loneliness had inhibited him. he had failed yoongi anyways - seeing him with hoseok must have broken yoongi's heart. he had gone to the u.s to study dance with yoongi's ex instead of explaining himself. he should have stayed outside yoongi's door all those years ago. but he left, selfishly. there was no way: he had no chance of winning him back.
awkwardness cloaked the atmosphere like a thick scratchy blanket.
i hate this.
yoongi hated this. he didn't know what to do and all of a sudden, all he wanted was jungkook. jungkook's lips. his smile. his laugh. he wanted to part of his happiness once again. it had to been selfish to cruelly throw jungkook away the way he had done, but if he hadn't, then jungkook wouldn't have gone to america. he wouldn't have improved his dance and wouldn't have taught the subject he loved the way he did today. but...
since jungkook had come back, it was okay for them to be together again, right?
his hands moved of their own accord as he typed the words on his screen.
yoongi: hey kook.
yoongi: i missed you
jungkook's phone dinged with a message and he gasped in surprise at the messages, "what the-" -but yoongi wasn't listening. he was busy pouring out his feelings in the only way he knew he could.
yoongi: it's been a while, huh?
yoongi: you've grown so much and
yoongi: i may be the last person you want to hear from rn but
yoongi: im so proud of you
yoongi: after this, you can choose never to see me again
yoongi: i'll never contact you if you dont want me to
yoongi:but i just want to explain what happened all those years ago.
yoongi: yes. that time, i saw you with hobi talking in the shop
yoongi: but what you don't know, is that i heard his offer to take you to the u.s
yoongi: and i thought
yoongi: i'd be in the way of your dreams
yoongi: knowing you, you'd want to stay with me instead
yoongi: i wanted you to aim high and as mean as it was
yoongi: me leaving you meant you could achieve your dreams
yoongi: i'd give you up in a heartbeat if it meant your happiness
yoongi: but
yoongi: it must've been fate that we met again
yoongi: i thought you were my one night stand but turns out
yoongi: you just texted the wrong number and i assumed you were that guy
yoongi: but, jungkook,
yoongi: i was so glad that it was you when i saw you just now
yoongi: i thought you'd never want me back after all i did to you but
yoongi: fuck it
yoongi: i love you
yoongi: i hate that i left you in the way i did so
yoongi: lets never part again.
yoongi: want to fall in love with me too?
the elder man broke into a sob. so that was what it was? yoongi had done it so jungkook could work as hard as possible. yoongi didn't hate him! the revelation killed his soul and then revived it again as he furiously typed through tears:
