"Mommy, look what I found! A girl called out to her mother. A woman went towards her daughter asking what she had found. It was a small nymph who was crying. "Are you ok?" asked the girl's mother. "Please don't hurt me!" the small nymph stuttered afraid of being hurt. The little girl then assured that they wouldn't hurt her; it seems that the nymph had broken a wing. The girl and the woman took the nymph inside their hut and fixed her broken wing which the nymph was thankful for. "As a thank you for fixing my wing, I shall grant you a wish", the nymph said with a grin on her face. "Then please stay by my daughter's side, for my time is soon coming to an end".
I woke up from my sleep and smiled as I remembered the memory, the memory where I last saw my mother before her sickness got worse. "Astra! Are you awake?" I heard Tabitha call. "Yes, I'm on my way", I shouted back.
When I came down, I saw a blue haired nymph holding a spatula with one hand and the other on her hips. "Ok, we have a lot of work to do, so you better hurry" Tabitha said as I nodded back. We ate breakfast and got ready for work 'I never thought that being the guardian of the lake Blancnoir would be this handful' I thought. I went to my drawer and to put on my necklace; I stared at it for some time before hearing Tabitha call for me again.
"Always wear this necklace; it will protect you when I am not with you" my mother said as I nodded my head crying. She cupped my cheek and smiled comfortingly to me even though her time was up. "Find your brother and protect the 'light'..." were the last things I heard before she died.
I shook my head out of the memory and looked up to the sky; maybe someday I might find my brother soon. I heard Tabitha call for me again, but this time a bit angrier sounding like she could explode any time. "I'm coming!" despite her name meaning graceful, she sure was scary when she's angry.
I ran out the hut and began working; every day I would tend to creatures that needed help and sometimes gain new friends. Patrolling around the lake was the most important duty I had. I vowed to myself to protect the lake since mom died. If the 'light' fell into the wrong hands, it would give them the power to destroy the world.
The 'light' was the lake's core which was hidden; no one actually knew where it was hidden. It was said that it can change its location, but if it were to hide inside a person, that person must be pure and the lake's water was made by its pure energy which keeps the forest alive.
Every now and then I meet the guardians of the forest who guards the other creatures, they are called behemoths. They don't really talk except for the alpha, they communicate through the mind. The behemoths were the ones that taught me the rest of my guardian training after mom had passed away; they were very close to me that I considered them family.
"Astra, are you okay? You have been spacing out quite a lot today" Tabitha asked worriedly. I turned to her smiling and said, "I'm ok, it's just that I have plenty of thoughts in my head". She stared at me really hard making me a bit scared until she just confirmed my excuse.
I heard a loud roar through the forest and saw birds flying away. 'Devlin!' I thought as I ran towards the roar. I ran and ran as fast as I can to the place, I jumped over the tree roots and dodged the branches and vines.
As I came towards the sound I noticed that there were knights from Alastar and a boy who looked like a noble, and gave the knights orders. Devlin looked at them with a hungry and bloodthirsty look. I wonder what could have made Devlin act like this, sure he was fierce and all, but he never looks at people or trespassers with hungry, bloodthirsty looks. I snapped out of my thoughts when I noticed that the trespassers had run away, but Devlin did not look satisfied at all, he only chased after the noble. I ran after them trying to catch up. Devlin was the fastest behemoth of them all which made it hard for me to catch up; I hoped that the noble would be okay though.
Devlin finally stopped running and when I came, I saw that the noble was cornered. The noble unsheathed his sword and got ready to fight, I knew already that he and his men would not be able to handle a behemoth at all, and fighting Devlin alone would give him a big disadvantage.
I was still thinking if I should help the noble or if he was one of those who wanted the 'light' and use it for evil purposes. Not even thinking, my body moved on its own showing them where I hid. The noble looked shocked and I tried my best to be emotionless as I thought about what I should do next.
