I woke up in the clearing. Rubbing my eyes, I noticed the golden light of the sunrise peeking through the vail of trees. Struggling to stand, I took a few wobbly steps towards home. Did I mention I was exhausted? Half and hour later, I'm trekking up the many stairs to the palace. Quietly, I stepped into the throne room. Pacing back and forth was my father, followed by Zula. I slid into a conveniently placed, ridiculously dark corner*. The two looked like they stayed up all night, the bags under their eyes kinda gave it away.

"It's not your fault, Zula. She controls herself." He said

"Sir, it is! I should have seen her back."

I assumed they were talking about me. Hashie rushed to Vancin, glancing at Zula.

"Zula, go check around the square again. But know, you are not blamed." Vancin ordered.

Zula nodded and rushed out. Looking back at the king, I saw what struck my curiosity in the first place. Vancin's eyes slowly faded from dark green to a sea blue that slowly grew lighter as it neared the pupil. Hashie put his hands on Vancin's shoulders.

"Vancin, you must calm down. You can't hold the magic with this stress level." He said.

My father took a few deep breaths and his eyes turned back to green. Hashie dropped his hands to his side. I slid as close to the door as I dared and stepped into the light.

"Heyo!" I beamed, as cheerful as possible.

"Where have you been?" Vancin demanded.

"Uhm.. I was in the forest... helping the uh trees grow?" I half lied.

"Come on Kyanna, we all know you can't do plant magic. Or any magic, at least not yet." Hashie sighed.

It was true. Until that day, I had never used magic before.

"Uhm... well maybe.. maybe I learned uhm, today." I sputtered, my mind racing for an excuse.

"Kyanna, if you can do plant magic then do it now. Make a flower grow right here." Vancin said, gesturing to the spot in between us.

I contemplated channeling my new fount power, but I didn't know how to switch elements and I didn't want to burn down the palace. I bowed my head, my face heating up.

"I can't.... I lied." I muttered.

"See. Told you." Hashie mumbled, under his breath.

Anger flared through me. I clenched my fists.

"We'll he can't do it either!" I said, my voice on the brink of a yell by the last word, gesturing to Vancin.

They both seemed taken aback by my sudden out anger. Honestly, I was too. Fear struck me as I processed what I said, but the anger chased it off. Hashie was the first to break the silence.

"He most certainly can to!" He protested.

"Really?" I retaliated, "Then how come he never uses it?"

Vancin stared at me. I felt myself shrink away from gaze. He, of course, noticed.

"If you think I can't do magic, them you're wrong. I'm perfectly capable of it." He stated.

"If didn't say you couldn't do magic. I said you couldn't do plant magic" I snapped.

*Welp Kyanna kinda broke the forth wall a little bit... we'll have to get that fixed. Anyway, thank you all for your patience with me, it's greatly appreciated! I hope you enjoy the chapter!!
