i can't i haven't done one these for tyler but this is gonna make so many people mad but whatever. i actually used to be a tyler stan until later on this year so i know what i'm talking about
1. tyler, the creator has yet to release one iconic album
okay so bear me out on this one. i used to love tyler's problematic ass so much and i think he's a great artist but people act like this man is so revolutionary.
stop acting like frank, earl, and tyler were the iconic trio of odd future. it's only frank and earl.
the thing that keeps tyler relevant is this want to be different. remember when odd future was in their prime? nobody was doing what tyler was doing. i will give him the fact that he did shift pop culture but let's get into his music.
flower boy was his best album.
that album was pure gold and the transitions on that album were great. flower boy truly showed his growth from being that odd future problematic kid. i mean that could be argued because of cherry bomb but i payed that album dust.
okay but the reason i find none of tyler's albums iconic is because i never find myself wanting to go back to them. i feel like once i've listened to the album a couple of times, i'm done with it.
and that's very problematic to me because tyler was features with frank ocean and it's hard for me to stray away from a frank feature but of course i do because it's tyler.
okay so let's get into igor.
igor was an experience. if you actually listened to the album all the way through without any skips then you'll see the point of this album but it was BORING.
i can't believe i faked liking it because it's been like 3 or 4 months since the album came out and i don't want to listen to a single song.
the best songs on there are i think, a boy is a gun, and gone, gone / thank you. gone, gone / thank you should win a grammy because that shit was beautiful.
but it's hard for me to go back and listen to those particular song cause the album is a story and it's like you're picking and choosing part of a story.
2. his fanbase
remember the era of odd future? tyler was in his fucking PRIME. at my school there were many white kids that liked him but it was mostly teenage mexicans boys who use to wear obey and those black vans. they probably have a kid or few now but that's not the point.
tyler used to be so controversial and the fact that this young black boy was redefining the sound of hip hop, using the f-word, and just being so problematic was revolutionary.
and that's the thing about tyler you guys. he's revolutionary but not his music.
he made it cool to wear vans, supreme, and all that shit.
but i think wear his legacy started to die down was his pandering to white people.
DON'T ATTACK ME.
i just feel like the whole kissing white boys and feeding into this white people bs really made that shift on who his fanbase was. it was no longer the mexican obey kids but it mostly started turning into upper middle class white tanner who skate boards and his 2 black friends give him the n-word pass.
DID I FUCKING LIE????
i noticed something so interesting during the flower boy era and it was that people of color weren't really into tyler like they used to. tyler was literally out here COONING for white boys and it worked.
so then why is it that they didn't really take igor so well?
well we have to first dissect flower boy. what did flower boy have that pulled the white demographic?
rex orange county, frank ocean, asap rocky, jaden smith, and steve lacy.
white boys love those artist more than crack or guns.
this was the album for white boys you guys.
why is it that the feature with estelle didn't do so well? i personally think it has to do with the fact that she doesn't really play into the appeal of white boys.
so what does this have to do with igor?
i think what didn't make this album as popular as flower boy was the fact that tyler left his coonish ways behind and didn't really pander to the white boys but his experience with falling and being heart broken by a man.
or maybe i'm reading too far into this because igor really has some TERRIBLE songs but that's a different story.
i have so much more shit to say, maybe i'll make a part two but anyways leave your opinion and follow me.
