It would have been easier, for everyone involved, if Ulfric had not fallen in love with me. If he had still hated me like he did when he found out my secret. If he sent me away, never to return.

But, alas, here I am, in the arms of the man I love deeply, who refuses to let me go.

" Ulfric, it doesn't feel better, but believe me. It is better this way." I reasoned, prying his hands from my face.

" No. I don't believe that. Asdis, I fight my hardest when you are at my side. I think clearer when you're near." He said, his blue eyes glinting in the starlight.

" Ulfric that-"

" No, Asdis. I am a better man with you. I believe-no- I know I can be the king this country needs when you are with me. I can't do this alone." He pleaded, taking my hand in his. I widened my eyes as he knelt down. " Asdis Steelbrook, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

" No."

Ulfric looked up at me, his expression a mix between shock and confusion.

" Asdis, I-"

" Ulfric, I cannot marry you." I said, turning my back to him.

" Why not?" He asked.

" Because, Ulfric, I cannot. There are things you do not understand."

" Then help me understand." He pleaded, taking my hands in his.

" I cannot. You will not understand." I said, taking my hands back and leaving him in the Great Hall.

It had been weeks since Ulfric and I last spoke.

We, and the bulk of the Stormcloak army, had returned to Windhelm days after taking Whiterun. It was nice to be back within familiar halls.

I was now standing next to Galmar in the throne room, Ulfric perched on his throne as citizens came to declare their grievances. Most were about chickens or cows, something trivial that didn't concern a king. A few, however, were complaints about a dragon nesting nearby, taking livestock and burning homes during the night. Surprise, surprise, that piqued my interest.

Ulfric did not look at me, nor did I expect him to. He hasn't ever since I rejected his proposal. Neither one of us have told Galmar either, and I cannot wait until that breaks loose.

" My Jarl, I have four chickens as dowry for my daughter, and still her future father-in-law demands more!" An old farmer proclaimed, a young woman looking shamefully down at her feet. Her eyes were bright and full of life, and she had an innocent air about her. There was no denying she was beautiful, and her good manners would get her far.

" Well my son needs more than a few chickens! How is he supposed to provide for your brat!?" The other old man shouted, shaking his finger angrily at her as he ranted. The son did nothing but watch, seeming uninterested in the ordeal.

" More? By Talos, I cannot give more for my daughter! I have two little ones still at home!"

" Then we will not proceed-"

" Enough." I finally interjected after realizing Ulfric was not going to say anything.

The entire room looked to me, watching me with interest as I continued.

" You two talk about this woman as if she is property. Is your daughter only worth a few measly chickens?" I said, advancing on one father. " And you'd dare take the livelihood of another just to satiate your own greed?" I snarled at the other.
