it was a normal night in the tavern. most of the men there were in their uniform, they were celebrating a man going up a rank in the army. this man was named Adam Thomas.
{adam is not a real person}
Adam had been my friend for about 2 years now. he joined the army after a conversation we had.
Flashback
"Adam, I just think it's unfair that women cant join the war. if they are losing men, then they should take what they can get. I don't want any ' the war is no place for a women' horseshit" I complained. every time I told someone this, they all agreed with the people who said that women can't fight, but not Adam, he thought that women are just as capable as men if not more.
"I know Y/N, it's not like you would be slowing us down. most men in the war die. if women join and die there would be almost no difference if anything they would be a big help, what's the point of fighting it. god, I wish Washington saw what we see. he would for sure let you join." he said. he was always passionate about these things. me and Adam were abolitionist and feminist. any sort of discrimination was a no in our book. that's why we where best friends, we didn't know anyone that had the same views as us, that's what made our friendship special.
" You should join the war, spread your beliefs, you would make a great soldier."
"I will think about it..."
flashback over
I was so proud of him.
" Hey Y/N" he ran over and gave me a tight hug
"CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??"
I chuckled a bit " I'm so proud of you my boy" I said, we both had a laughing fit.
" Madam, can I please get some ale?" a man yelled.
I gave Adam a look to tell him I had to get back to work. he smiled at me and walked away.
I went around the tavern filing the men's tin cups with ale.
it was a good night until a group of red coats came in holding rifles at us and pointing their guns at the soldiers and the leader of the group holding a pistol to my head. Adam got scared, but not for his own life, he was scared for me.
suddenly the leader came over to me and pulled me out from behind the counter.
"take the men, leave the lady. she's not with them." said a man in the back. the man holding me let go of my arm and threw me into the corner of the tavern. I glanced at Adam, he looked relieved but also terrified. none of them had their firearms on them. they were here to have fun, not fight.
one of the red coats took the man close to him. I knew that man. I knew his kid. please don't hurt him.
" Sorry boy, you have to serve as a warning to everyone here" he shot him, in cold blood, without hesitation. I felt the world stop, I felt my hands fall to my side. these men were ruthless, terrible people.
"ADAM" I screamed
"Y/N" he screamed back
that was a mistake, I shouldn't have called for him. one of the men shot him in his face.
I felt my face fall, my heart drop, the tears fall down my face. he's gone, no, please.
"ADAM NO!!"
I screamed, my tears staining my dress. everything hurt, I couldn't feel anything but guilt and sadness.
they smirked at me and left.
those monsters could've left with one man's life, but it's my fault they left with two.
