Today was the 18th
Washington had arranged the carriage to come today, but he didn't mention a time.
I'm assuming early morning.
I got up early to get ready for the meeting with Washington, I decided to ask Washington questions that Adam would've asked him.
I put on my new dress and did my (h/c) hair up.

When I was done getting ready, I walked to the tavern. Just because I'm talking to Washington today doesn't mean I don't have work. Some of my regular customers noticed that I was dressed very formal for just a normal day in the tavern, some even asked questions like "what's the occasion" or "are you looking for someone to court you?"

But questions about men courting me only got glares in response.

I knew if I told the wrong person what I was doing, they would try to discourage me. Or worse, tell the town what I was doing. And if it got to anyone who wasn't a Patriot, then I could be target number 1 on their hit list.

I knew that I had to find someone to run the tavern while I was gone for the day.

But I couldn't find anyone, maybe I just have to close up early.

Wait, is that abe?

I thought yesterday would be the only time he came here, guess I was wrong.

"Abe, welcome back!"

"Hello, y/n" his voice was getting lower as he walked over to the counter, almost a whisper.

"Do you have anywhere not in front of people. We need to talk." Abraham whispered. He seemed serious, was this about my meeting with Washington?

I guess he noticed my confusion

"Trust me, this is urgent. Just act like your going to go show me something."

I followed his directions.

"OH, yes of course right this way," I said, a little louder than my normal talking. I looked at abe, he was awkwardly smiling at anyone that glanced at us while I took him to the back of the tavern.

"I know you have a meeting with Washington-" I cut him off

"How do you know about that"

"I'll tell you, first tell me if you told anyone about it"

"Of course I didn't! I could be killed by anyone who wasn't a patriot."

"Ok, good. I need you to ask for someone while you're at his camp"

"First, tell me how you know"

He hesitated for a bit.

"I read the letter"

"DID YOU BREAK INTO MY TAVERN?!" I whisper yelled

"Yes, I'm sorry but I thought you where a spy-" I cut him off

"What do you mean you 'thought I was a spy'?"

"I know about Adam, I thought you were using him before he passed. I had to make sure that letter wasn't someone thanking you for giving away information."

"Why would that matter to you? How do you know Adam?"

He was at a loss for words for a few seconds, then he picked back up.

"You'll find out if you ask for Benjamin Tallmadge."

I spotted the carriage, I called abe back before he could walk off.

"Abe"

"Yes?"

"Can you please run the tavern while I'm out?"

"Sure"

"Thank you. I have to go, I'll tell you how it goes."

I ran off to the carriage and smiled at the man controlling it and got inside.

Why does abe need me to talk to someone?

A/n

Benjamin Tallmadge was a real person and he was head of intelligence. Remember that almost nothing in this story is real.
