y/n pov. back in the camp.
" SIR, THERES NO EXCUSE!'' Tallmadge yelled at Washington. Tallmadge had been yelling at Washington for a while now, he was trying to get Alex trialed earlier. he was truly angry at Alex, but so was I. What he did could never be forgiven, Adam was a kind soul and shouldn't have died like that. Adam wanted to die like a hero, and that's exactly what he was, a hero. Alex was getting trialed the next week, benjamin wanted him trialed that week. Washington was fed up with Tallmadge. Washington also looked hurt, in a letter Adam sent me he told me that Washington treated him more like a son than his own father. they were very close, and I knew it hurt Washington just as much as it hurt me and ben to have to face the monster that killed such a wonderful person.
"ben, please, it's hard enough for us, imagen what Washington is feeling. benny, please." benjamin was fuming, he was about to snap. he closed his eyes and sat beside me, I rubbed his back to let him know he's not alone.
"benjamin," Washington spoke. "please listen to y/n, if I could get him trialed earlier, don't you think I would?" Washington sighed.
"I'm trying to get him trialed in at least 3 days. I'm trying Tallmadge, I'm sorry.."
ben only got up and walked out of the tent, I went after him.
"my apologies sir, thank you," I said while walking out, Washington gave me a sad smile in response. I didn't want ben to do something he's going to regret. I looked around to try and find ben, I saw him going up to one of the only wooden buildings in the camp, it was the holding area for prisoners. I knew exactly what benjamin was going to do. I ran towards him as he walked into the building. I made it to the door and opened it, I looked straight ahead. I saw ben reaching through the bars on Alexes holding cell and taking a grip on his shirt collar. I had never seen ben look so scary, he looked like he was going to scream. but before I could get any words out, ben started pounding on Alexes head. my heart sank, I ran over to ben to get him to stop.
" BEN STOP!" I screamed frantically, I started to run up to him. he was still punching alex, I was terrified. I started tugging at his hands and attempting to pull away the arm he was using to bludgeon Alex. at this point ben was yelling and so was i. I was begging him to stop, but he was yelling at me to getaway. after about a minute of this, ben got too tired to continue. he threw Alex back to the ground in his cell and spat at him.
"bastard..." he mumbled as he began to storm off.
I ran after him, he had tears streaming down his face. he looked...broken. All the life, charm, happiness he had in him had melted away and was replaced with sorrow and grief.
"i-I'm sorry" he squeaked with a quiet sob.
"I'm so, so so so sorry a/n/n..." when he said that I thought I was going to cry. Adam had been the only person to call me that, I wanted to breakdown when grief washed through me. I hugged ben to help him calm down, he was crying, but I didn't judge since I had begun to cry with him. it all came back to me. every moment, every compliment, every joke and every conversation me and Adam had flooded back. I squeezed ben tighter, ben was my only friend right now, I'm not going to mess this up. ben let go of me and so did I, we both chuckled at the sight of our puffy red eyes. I started to think about how long I'm gonna be here until I'm sent back to the tavern. I remembered I was supposed to stay the night.
"hey, ben..."
"mhmm"
"Where am I sleeping tonight?"
"ill go ask Washington, c'mon." ben gestured for me to follow him and I obliged.
we entered Washington's tent, Washington had started to drown himself in work.
benjamin started, " sir, id like to apologize for the way I acted."
"its fine ben," Washington said, giving him a reassuring smile. ben immediately relaxed.
" Sir, where will miss l/n be sleeping for the night?"
"uh," Washington thought for a moment.
" well, i guess she will be sleeping in your tent Tallmadge."
I sighed in relief, I didn't want to stay in some random persons tent anyways.
