I woke up to sunlight pouring in the carriage and the whining of horses.
We were at camp, Washington outside the carriage.
Washington seemed nervous like something had happened while we were gone.
"Ben, Benjamin, wake up, " I whispered, nudging ben.
He shook In his sleep and finally woke up.
I pointed outside, only to realize that Washington was walking straight towards us.
In a panic, ben started to open the carriage door and rush me out.
I quickly got my leather case and jumped out, and was faced with a stressed gorge Washington.
My heart was racing, my mind whirling around how me and ben might be in trouble.
"Tallmadge, 2 prisoners are missing."
He said.
"Is- is Alex missing?" I said, mind whirling.
"No, he's still here, but he freed them, he gave them the information they needed to locate our campsite. If they get to a troop we could be under attack, no one's been able to locate them."
Shit, how are we going to get out of this?
"Men are surrounding the base, correct?" Ben said.
"Of course." Replied Washington.
"Setauket." I blurted out.
They both looked at me with confusion and curiosity.
"They can only head to Setauket in the conditions they're in, and Alex's information would lead them there. Ben, write a letter to Abraham and Caleb, write one to ana, tell her to keep a lookout in her tavern. Write to anyone you know there, they will locate them" I said, jotting off every idea that came to mind.
"Washington, sir! We got something!" Yelled a man, Washington was quick to follow the shout.
"Get on with it!" He yelled at ben while running off.
Ben rushed into camp, me following close behind.
My dress flowing behind me as I chased after him.
He promptly opened a tent and started searching around for parchment.
He found a piece and slammed it on a desk while pulling out a quill from a drawer underneath.
He began to write, scribbling down everything necessary.
The scratching of the page rang in my ears.
I watched as Ben finished off one page and set it aside and began another.
Suddenly, someone started shouting out for Ben.
"Major! Major!" I heard someone scream from outside.
Seconds later a man bursts through the tent, shoving me aside from his path.
"Major, we found them. They are currently getting put back in their cell."
I watched Ben's face become washed with relief.
I had one thought on my mind, what if they told someone else before getting captured?
"How do you know that they didn't tell anyone else what Alex told them? How do you know that no one else has that information?"
Ben looked at me, he had a cold look on his face.
"We don't, so we have to hope. Knowing how spontaneous the British are they would attack in just a couple weeks if they had that information."
Ben peered at the man still standing in the tent.
"Tell Washington to have men on standby for the next two months, just in case."
With that, the man walked out.
Ben walked to the exit of the tent and gestured for me to follow him.
I obeyed.
He walked me across camp, some people staring at me and whispering, like a bunch of ladies in a knitting circle.
Ben had walked me to his tent and took my leather case, placing it next to his basket of clothes.
He walked out and left me in the tent for a minute before returning with blankets and a pillow.
"Oh, we've upgraded I see!" I say jokingly.
Ben chuckled, placing the blankets next to his cot.
"Ok, lots of drama has happened since you got here and I apologize. And you captured a spy that could've caused a lot of damage, and I can't thank you enough." Ben said, his voice laced with guilt and gratitude.
"Really, it's fine. I'm just glad to have been given a chance." I replied, giving him a sheepish smile.
He gave me a heartwarming smile.
He sat down at his desk and looked in his drawer, pulling out papers filled with writing.
He turned to me, "I need you to look over these." He said, handing me the papers.
I quickly looked through them, it's about the marriage, about the man that I have to get to marry me.
I scrunched my face in confusion,
Ben took notice.
"I wasn't supposed to give you so much information about the man, but I didn't think it was right to let someone marry someone else who they don't have a clue about. I wrote all of this before you even arrived at camp." He said quickly.
"Thank you, Ben. You're too kind." I said. I was proud of Ben for keeping manners and empathy even if he's in a war.
He's too kind to me.
I wish I could return the favor.
