I woke up and looked around, my eyes adjusting to dim light.
Benjamin was also awake, but it seems like he has been awake long before. He had a candle lit inside the carriage, where did he get that?
I noticed he had a pamphlet in his hand. I was able to read the pamphlet from where I was,
"It is pleasant to observe by what regular gradations we surmount the force of local prejudice, as we enlarge our acquaintance with the world," I said quietly but loud enough for Ben to hear. He turned to face me,
"I see you're awake." He said, chuckling in the last bit.
"What are you reading?" I said in a childish tone.
"Common Sense" he flipped the pamphlet, "by Thomas Paine" he finished.
He flipped the pamphlet around and started where I had finished, " A man born in any town in
England divided into parishes, will naturally associate most with his fellow parishioners
because their interests in many cases will be common and distinguish him by the name
of neighbor; if he meet him but a few miles from home, he drops the narrow idea of a
street, and salutes him by the name of townsman." He spoke in a terrible fake British accent.
I chuckled,
" your accent is terrible."
Ben shrugged,
" it's not like I'm actually trying to become British."
I shrugged and nodded.
"We should be in Setauket in a few minutes." He reminded me,
"Can't wait to see my mom, she's going to be so confused." We both started laughing.
Suddenly, the carriage came to a halt followed by a horse whining.
"I think we're here," I muttered, shifting off of Ben. Ben quickly closed his pamphlet and gathered his coat and candle.
He opened the door to the carriage, gesturing for me to come out through his door. I obeyed, taking in the cool air of the night and staring at the end of the street. I pointed at the building at the end of it, my tavern. I took bens hand and forced him to follow me. I wanted to make sure it was locked and that I had stocked every liquor inside for when I came back. I ran inside through the back door, Ben following closely behind.
"Phew, the place is still in one piece," I spoke, breaking the silence in the room. Benjamin chuckled.
I checked all the liquor, nothing had to be stocked except for the wine.
"Ben, stay here. I'm going to restock the wine." He nodded and i walked him over to one of the tables.
I sprinted to the wine cellar, avoiding the objects in my path. I stopped outside the door, as I went to open it I heard hushed voices inside.
"You couldn't even tell mary immediately but you told some random lady you met once? Woody, do you understand how stupid-" a raspy voice spoke, getting interrupted by another.
"I knew that she wasn't a Loyalist, she had letters sent directly from Washington."
"Boys, " a woman's voice sprung, " calm down, we could get caught, Simcoe has probably noticed my absence by now. He's still in my tavern." She said in a worried voice. I opened the door to meet 3 people's eyes glancing back at me.
"y/n? Back so soon, heh." One spoke, I faced the owner of the voice, it was Abraham.
"Abe?" I looked around," brewster?" I looked at the woman standing in between them, " and you are?"
"Anna, anna strong." She added, holding out a hand for me to shake. I took her hand and shook it,
"Y/n" she smiled at me and retreated to her original position.
"What's going on here?" I questioned.
"We just needed somewhere quiet to talk"
"About what."
Caleb and anna looked away from Abraham, expecting him to answer, but he was looking at them for guidance.
"About... Our next mission."
I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came out. The second I regained the ability to talk ben cut me off.
"Y/n, you ready to go- oooooh hheeeyyy Abe." Ben looked just as confused as I was. He was leaning on me trying to get a good look at what was happening in front of him.
"Ben? What are you doing in setucket?" Anna asked
"I- I um" ben didn't have an answer, but I realized that we had to go get my clothes and head back to the carriage as it was waiting for us.
"It was nice seeing you guys, but we have to go. Just lock up the tavern."
I shouted, taking ben by the for arm and dragging him to the front of the tavern to gather his things.
He quickly grabbed his things as he realized I wasn't going to release him until we were outside of the tavern.
I let go of him as we walked out the door, he rubbed his arm and moved his sleeve to check if I left any marks.
"That hurt." He chuckled out, I giggled and started speaking.
"Ok, next stop is my mom's house, I hope you know at least some French, she's not too good with English."
"Oh, ok, um, I'm fluent so I think I'll be fine." He fumbled out.
We walked to the small home that was only one block over in silence, I was to busy taking in the cold air of the night. Ben decided to shatter the quiet.
"You know, my dad's church is over on a hill by annas tavern, " he let out, he faced me I locked eyes with him and gave him a puzzling look.
He gave me an anger and sadness look when he thought about what he said,
"But the British turned it into a stable, so now it's for their use, I can't even visit it anymore without almost getting shot." He looked down, I didn't know what to do.
"Sorry benny" there was silence for a moment but it felt like hours.
"Don't apologize, it's not your fault." He said warmly. I never could understand this man, just a ball of emotions that's been waiting to be asked about. My thoughts were interrupted, I spotted my mom's home and smiled.
We stopped outside the front door,
I had just realized we forgot to ask Brewster to take care of my mom.
"We forgot to ask Brewster." I signed out,
"Oh, trust me they know." I looked at him confused.
"I left a note." I chuckled and looked back at the door.
"Let's do this."
