"Miss Stewart you're late." Mr Paterson said.
I pulled out my earphones.
"Yeah I am." I told him like it wasn't already obvious.
I saw Eve my bestest friend ever and went to sit beside her.
"You know what this means, don't you Miss Stewart?" He asked.
"No sir, could you enlighten me please?" I replied with a smirk.
By now it might be pretty obvious that Mr Paterson and I had a mutual hatred for each other.
"It means if you come in late for class one more time then it's a detention." He told me.
"Actually sir that's not what it means." I said.
"Oh yes it is."
"No, because this is my first time being late." It was true I'd never been late before, "So it's two more times before a detention."
I sat down triumphantly whilst Mr Paterson looked hot and bothered.
Score 1 to me. I thought.
"Hey, what's up?" Eve asked.
"Nothing much. How's you?" I replied.
"Well I'm going to see my auntie and cousins at the weekend and that's about all my news."
"And what about you Tessa?" I asked my other friend on my left side.
"Not much." She said.
"How are you feeling?" Eve asked our friend.
Tessa had been diagnosed with diabetes type one last week and has been off and on ever since. Only few people knew, me and Eve being two of them.
"Good. I've been coping better than I thought I would. But right now I'm low and it's not going so well." She replied.
"Ahh so that's why you're snacking on skittles." Eve said.
"Well you're quick to catch on Evie!" I joked.
Tessa burst out laughing .
"Thanks Kods I needed that." She told me smiling.
"Its ok it's what friends are for." I said matching her smile.
"Right you can just go, the bell's about to go." Mr Paterson said to the class.
I gave Mr Paterson my most innocent smile and said, "Bye sir have a wonderful weekend and I'll see you on Monday!"
Once outside the classroom Tessa, Eve and I burst out laughing.
"Well I'll see you two later!" Eve said, still laughing.
"Yeah see ya!" Tessa called as Eve walked away.
"Come on Tess we gotta go now." I told her.
"I'm coming, I'm coming calm down!" She snapped.
Oh God she's high! I thought.
"Tess?" I asked cautiously.
"What!" She replied, still sounding annoyed.
"You need to check you're BS cause I think it's high."
She got out Zozo her PDA and checked.
"Ugh!" She groaned.
"What is it?" I asked.
"320" She replied.
"God, I'll get you some water." I told her.
"No, no it's cool I've got some." She said to me.
She got out her water as we stepped into class five minutes late but we were two of five people there. I went over to the teacher.
"Hey sir, I just came to say that Tessa's blood sugar is high so please don't ask her anything, once it's stable I'll put my thumb up in the air ok. But it might not last long." I told him.
"Thank you for the heads up Kody. It's much appreciated." Mr Barrington said, "Now go take your seat."
"Sure thing sir."
I went over to sit beside Tessa.
"I told Mr Barrington."
"Thanks." She replied softly, "I'm so sorry I didn't mean to be such a be-atch back there."
"Hey it's nothing you can control you just have to... Well... control it, but we'll get through this together ok." I told her.
"I'm gonna check." She said, with a sigh.
After a couple of minutes, we got the number from Zozo.
"And the number is...?" I asked.
"108." She replied.
"Ok. So that means what exactly?"
"I should be good for about fifteen minutes."
I put my thumbs up in the air and waved my arm a little to catch Mr Barrington's attention because he was in the middle of a lecture to one of the boys about how throwing a pencil is dangerous. She saw and came over.
"So you're ok now Tessa?" He asked cautiously, just like I had.
"I'm fine for the now Sir." Came her reply.
Mr Barrington went back to his desk.
"Well class since some people," He glared at the boy who had thrown the pencil, "have been mucking around and I had to sort that we only have about ten minutes left so just get out homework to do from your other classes or something and be quiet 'cause I have work to do too."
"Well that's new." Tess stated.
"What do you mean that's new?" I asked her.
"He would usually give us work to do but he's not, I wonder why?" She said.
I know. I thought.
I got out some homework to do and got about half of it done before the bell rang.
The day couldn't get any slower could it? I asked myself.
Just one more period before break. I can last that.
"You coming Kods?" Tessa called.
"Yeah just coming."
I walked to the door and stopped. I turned around.
"Sir?" I asked my teacher.
"Yes Kody what is it?"
"Why did you not give us work just 'cause you were worried about Tessa's blood sugar?" It had been bugging me, and I needed to know.
"I don't want her to think I'm babying her, but I just didn't want her stressing over the work whilst battling a high." He replied smoothly.
"How's Dylan by the way?" I asked about his son with type one, just like Tessa.
"He coping better than I thought he would but still not as well as Tessa has been." He said thoughtfully.
"Ok thanks sir and say hi to Dylan for me." I told him as I walked out the room.
