Hey there, world.~

So once again, I am attempting to actually finish a story. This time I'm trying something different and I'm going to wing nearly everything in this story, because two (short) stories I've written in the past like that turned out to win contests XD Go figure, eh?

The one thing I'm sure of, this is a girl x girl story. There will be some questionable parts to this, which is why I have it rated PG-13. I'll be sure to warn you if something 'inappropriate' is going to happen in a chapter.

I hope you guys like this! ^^ As always, please vote if you like and I'm always open to constructive criticism (:

The first thought on Cricket's mind when she opened her eyes was that she wanted desperately to close them and find sleep again. This was the first thing on her mind every single morning during the week, but if she listened to this thought, she'd be in deep shit.

Groaning, she threw her raggedy old comforter off of her small frame and swung her legs over the side of the bed, pulling herself into a sitting position. She didn't need to look in a mirror to know her bronze hair was a tattered mess, and she could feel the dried drool on the side of her mouth.

She was always such a looker in the mornings.

Not.

With a half-hearted grunt of effort, she pushed herself to her feet, ankles cracking as she made her way out of her bedroom and down the hall to the bathroom. The sound of the shower running behind the closed door told her that her best friend, Carolina, was taking her time this morning. Or she'd fallen asleep in the water. (Cricket wouldn't have been surprised – it had happened before.)

So she sank down against the wall outside of the bathroom door, feeling the heat from Carolina's shower warm her cold, bare feet. For several years now, she lived with her best friend and the girl's family. After her parents' deaths, her own relatives had estranged her. Some thought she'd played a part in it – which was hilarious, really. Back then, Cricket wouldn't dare hurt a fly. Her other relatives just couldn't care for her.

But honestly? Cricket had grown used to it. Carolina had been like family to her for years before the tragedy, and the girl's own parents adored the other. She liked living here, but nothing would ever compare to being with her own family.

Cricket didn't notice when the water shut off, having started to nod off again. In fact, she didn't stir until the bathroom door opened and the sound of Carolina's voice filled her ears.

“Cricketot, get up. Bathroom's open.”

Immediately, Cricket's hazel eyes fluttered open and she stared up at the girl in front of her. Blonde hair, sea-green eyes, tall and curvy... Carolina was easily a model. She was bubbly and outgoing, always smiling. This was exactly the opposite of Cricket, who preferred to spend her weekends inside with a book in hand and her cat purring soundly beside her. How the two managed to be so close, everyone seemed to wonder.

It was totally different when they were younger. Like every cliché pair of best friends, the girls had met on their first day of kindergarten. They were sitting together at a table, and Carolina was scribbling a picture of her old dog, Daisy, when Cricket looked up from her own drawing of a flower and boldly introduced herself. Carolina was briefly caught off guard by the girl's intensity, but greeted the peppy little girl back. They'd been inseperable ever since.
