When she opened her eyes again, she was alone. All evidence of Carolina spending the rest of the night and apparently a good part of the morning in her bed was nonexistant, and Cricket supposed she shouldn't be disappointed. It was rare that she woke up after a nightmare to find the blonde still in her bed, and even then they never spent too much time lingering on it.

Unwilling to move from her spot just yet, Cricket retrieved her phone from its place on her nightstand and unlocked it. She wasn't surprised to have no notifications, or texts or missed calls. Besides Carolina and their friend Riley, Cricket didn't really talk to anyone else. This suited her just fine, as she thought it was exhausting to keep up with the social aspect of life.

She was halfway through a game of Fruit Ninja when she felt her bed shift the slightest bit and caught the sound of a 'meow' coming from the foot of it. Moving her phone away from her face, she saw the furry one of Oli as he strutted towards her. He nuzzled into her as soon as his front paws landed on her chest, and she cuddled him back.

"Hey you," She cooed softly as she played with his ears. "Where's Mommy number two?"

Of course, the cat didn't answer her (she would have checked herself into a mental hospital if he had), and she didn't expect him to, either.

After a few minutes of loving up her faithful cat, she got up from bed and headed out into the living room. The TV was on, but no one was around to watch it. Cricket was just beginning to wonder where her friend had gone when the smell of pancakes suddenly registered in her brain.

This sense carried her out to the kitchen, where she found Carolina stood over the stove, dropping ladles of pancake batter onto a griddle. Her parents must have gone to work earlier, which meant the girls were entirely alone again - but of course, they were used to it by now.

Grinning, the brunette padded up to the girl and wrapped her arms around the other's waist, resting her chin on Carolina's shoulder.

"It looks great, dear," She joked, and the blonde laughed almost nervously.

"They better. You didn't hear me yelling at this thing about twenty minutes ago?"

Cricket chuckled. "High flames?"

"Satan is trying to kill me."

Together, the two laughed and Cricket untangled her arms from around the girl. Walking over to the microwave where she knew Carolina was storing already-made pancakes, she swiped one and carried it back over to the stove. Ripping off a piece of it, she popped it into her mouth before sticking the rest in Carolina's now open one, and she grunted in thanks as she took the final two pancakes off of the pan.

Minutes later, the two were sat at the dining room table with a decent tower of pancakes on each of their plates. Neither said a word as they dug in, not caring about table manners while they shoved bite after bite into their mouths.

Needless to say, it didn't take them long to devour every last pancake, and once Cricket took her last bite she leaned back against her chair, groaning.

"I hate you for being able to cook so well." She whined, peering over at her friend.

"You would starve without me." Carolina grinned, and Cricket didn't deny it. She wasn't the worst cook in the world, she liked to think, but she'd had her own share of small kitchen fires and burnt-to-a-crisp scrambled eggs. Eggs - the easiest thing in the world to cook, yet she always seemed to turn them into a charred mess.

"So what do you want to do today?" The blonde asked moments later, pushing a trail of leftover maple syrup around her plate.

Cricket shrugged, staring off into space. "Dunno. We could meet up with Riley if you want."

Riley was their 'third wheel,' as they called her. She was a tiny girl with hair as black as night and as long as a Monday. They'd met her during freshmen year biology, often adding her into their lab group when two partners just didn't please their picky teacher. The three girls had gotten close, and had hung out quite often. Just a couple months ago they ditched school to go for a mini road trip that had surprisingly gone through successfully, and no member of the trio was caught.

"Eh..." Carolina hesitated, and didn't meet Cricket's gaze when she continued. "I kind of just want it to be us, you know? Ri's great, but I miss when it was just us."

"It's always been just us," Cricket pointed out, eyes narrowing at the girl. "Riley didn't come between us."

Another few moments of silence, and Carolina's chair squeaked as she pushed it back and took both their plates, carrying them to the sink to be washed. "Still..."

Cricket frowned. "Still nothing, Carolina....What's up with you lately? You're not...you're not you."

A fork clattered loudly in the sink as the blonde dropped it. "What the hell do you mean I'm not me? Who the fuck did I become, Justin Bieber? Well, write a damn letter to the government and demand I be exported out of the country then, if I'm so bad."

The brunette jumped to her feet, her hands balling into fists as she felt herself growing irritated. "That's not what I meant and you know it! You didn't even fucking give me a chance to explain!"

"Then explain!" Her friend practically shrieked, abandoning the dirty dishes to round on Cricket.

"You used to be so outgoing, you partied every fucking weekend and never missed a chance to hang out with Riley or Naomi or Hannah! Now all you want to do is stay in. What happened to-"

"Maybe I'm tired of being so active all the time, did you ever think about that? Maybe I-" Carolina cut off, but the other girl was quick to jump back in.

"You didn't let me finish," Cricket snapped. "How about when I mention boys to you, huh? You never take any interest in them. Did someone hurt you?"

"I just don't like Dustin." Carolina said, voice suddenly lower as she looked away. Cricket could have sworn she saw a blush crawl onto her friend's cheeks.

"It's not just him, Carebear," Cricket said softly, using her old nickname for her best friend. "What about Michael or Tyler or Louis?"

Carolina avoided the question. "I'm just not interested in relationships right now."

Now, these two girls had known each other since they were practically still in diapers (Carolina wore pull-ups until she graduated kindergarten, but no one except Cricket knew this). It was second-nature for the brunette to know when her best friend was lying to her.

"That's not true," She said as calmly as she could. "Is it a girl? Are you-"

"Just forget it!" Carolina growled, and stormed from the kitchen. Not another word was spoken from the blonde, but the sound of her bedroom door slamming shut behind her made Cricket cringe.

Fuck, she thought to herself. I really fucked up this time.
