Like that morning, the car ride home was awkwardly silent. Cricket fiddled with her hands as they lay in her lap, making it obvious that she was nervous about speaking to her best friend, but because Carolina wasn't even looking at her, she didn't notice.

Once the car was parked in the driveway, Cricket got out and trailed after the blonde, glaring hard at the girl's back when she didn't bother to hold open the door for her and it nearly smacked her in the face.

Okay, I get I fucked up. But do you really have to be so rude?

Riley's advice played through the brunette's mind all evening, and Cricket was anxious to talk to her best friend, she really was. But of course, the girl's parents picked tonight of all nights to be home. Cricket loved the folks like they were her own, but she needed to talk to Carolina.

The adults obviously knew something was up with the girls during dinner, when neither spoke to each other nor spared the other even the smallest glance. She was thankful, however, that they didn't speak up about it.

After their meal, Cricket followed the girl back to her bedroom, calling out to her as she walked. “Carolina, can we talk?”

The blonde immediately rounded on her, anger and something else burning in her sea-green eyes. “About what? So you can just accuse me of something else?”

Cricket fought to keep a grip on herself and took a deep breath. “Please, Carebear...I just want to talk. I can't stand not talking to you.”

This seemed to soften the girl up, and she visibly relaxed but the other could tell she was still tense. “Okay.”

The two girls made their way into Carolina's room, which hadn't changed much over the years except that her pale blue bedroom walls (her parents had been expecting a boy) were now covered in posters of the girls' favorite bands instead of decorative baby rattles and other childish wall hangings from her childhood. Cricket sank onto the girl's bed as Carolina did too, and waited until eyes were on her before she began to speak.

“I'm sorry...” She began, taking a deep breath. “I shouldn't have pushed you to open up to me. I know that when something's really bothering you, you'll eventually come to me. Just like when you were seven and you were convinced Trace Lieder was a werewolf and that's why he kept scratching himself with his foot.” Cricket paused to chuckle to herself, recalling the memory. The kid ended up having lice and a few other conditions that the girls never figured out, but she remembered the fear on Carolina's face when she told her friend of her suspicions.

She could have sworn she saw Carolina's mouth twitch at the corners, but she didn't linger on it and forced herself to continue.

“Anyway, my point is that I really should not have pressured you to tell me something that you weren't ready to tell me yet, if anything is even wrong. I assumed shit, and I really should not have. I was just worried, Carebear... I don't ever want anything to happen to you, and I don't want you to be upset if there's something I can do about it.” She felt her heart flutter at the thought, which surprised and confused her. Still, she wasn't done her speech.

“You're my best friend, Carolina. You've been there through everything. I don't want to lose you because I fucked up. I'm sorry.”

For a few agonizing moments, the room was silent. Neither girl spoke, but Cricket could feel her heart pounding in her chest.

“Okay...” Carolina finally sighed after a few moments, and then reached for Cricket's hand. “I shouldn't have reacted like I did. You were just worried and I should have realized that. I'm sorry.”

Cricket gave her best friend's hand a squeeze before they simultaneously moved in for a hug, squeezing each other tightly.

“We good?” The brunette asked when they finally pulled away.

Carolina's cheeks flushed when she met the girl's hazel eyes, and she nodded. “Of course.”

Both girls smiled at the same time, grinning at each other like kids on Christmas morning. They stayed this way for a few seconds before the atmosphere seemed to suddenly change, and Carolina's smile disappeared. Her green-eyed gaze drifted down to Cricket's lips, her body beginning to lean towards the other's.

For some reason, Cricket found herself leaning in as well, her pulse quickening in anticipation. Were they really about to do this?

Their lips were centimeters apart when a sharp knock on Carolina's bedroom door startled them, and they jumped apart almost instantly, both of their faces heating up.

“Girls?”

The blonde didn't look at her friend as she called out for her mother to enter, and Cricket tried frantically to calm her pulse before the woman made an appearance in the room.

Oh my god.... She thought to herself. Did I just almost kiss my best friend?
