Danny had looked surprised, as if he hadn't expected Cricket to be there, let alone snap at him like she'd just killed his best friend.
But he tried to kill mine.
Stop that. It was an accident.
It could have been prevented.
"I just wanted to make sure she was okay," He said, stopping a few feet from Carolina's bed. "Has she woken up?"
"No." Cricket responded shortly, eyes narrowed at the blond boy.
Danny was quiet for a few moments, but then he took a breath and said, "It wasn't my fault, Cricket."
"You let her go off that ramp, didn't you?"
"She wanted to!"
"She never rode a fourwheeler a day in her life!" Cricket practically yelled, getting to her feet. "She wasn't fucking ready!"
"She seemed like it to me."
"Oh, and you're the picture-perfect judge now, are you?"
The boy's face flushed. "I never said that."
Cricket snorted. "I should have stopped her from hanging out with you."
"I wouldn't have listened."
The two teens froze as a new voice spoke up, soft and strained. Both sets of eyes flickered to the bed, where sea green eyes were gazing at the both of them.
"Carolina..." Cricket breathed. Danny looked like a huge weight had been lifted off of him.
"Now I won't be charged with murder!"
Carolina was frowning at the two of them, but she spoke to Cricket first. "It hurts."
The brunette nodded and immediately headed for the door. "I'll go get someone."
She walked out, leaving the two behind though she was hesitant to do so. It didn't take her long to find the doctor that she and Mrs. Borgenson had spoken to when they first arrived at the hospital. Filling him in on Carolina's waking, she watched as he nodded and headed for the room. At the same time he walked in, Danny walked out. His eyes landed on Cricket as he looked around, and he frowned.
"You don't have to worry about me being in her life anymore." He snapped.
Cricket was confused. "What?"
"She said she wasn't going to talk to someone you didn't like. I think they have her on too many drugs."
Her hands clenched into fists at her sides. "Not everyone likes you, Daniel. Get over yourself."
Danny glared at her for a long moment before he turned and walked away. Cricket didn't bother to follow after him, stepping back toward Carolina's room. She almost walked right into the doctor, who was leaving the girl's room.
"She'll be okay," He said, nodding towards the door. "She just needs to take it easy for a while. We're gonna keep her for a few days. I'll go contact her mother."
Cricket nodded and the man offered her a quick smile before walking away. Once he was gone, she made her way back into the room and sank down beside Carolina, who was watching some old movie on the TV in the corner.
Her hand reached out the second Cricket had taken a seat, and the brunette didn't think twice before she took it. Instead of just holding hands like they always did, Carolina tangled their fingers together, glancing up at Cricket to make sure this was okay.
The other girl was glad she wasn't the one hooked up to the heart monitor, because she was suddenly aware of her pulse quickening. They smiled at each other, and for a few moments neither spoke a word.
But silence can never last forever, and Carolina spoke up before the next commercial break. "How long have I been here?"
"I don't know," Cricket answered truthfully. "I'm not even sure how long I've been here."
The blonde sighed. "I'm sorry."
Puzzled, Cricket shot her a look. "What're you sorry for?"
"Going out. Especially with Danny. I...I don't know why I did it. I didn't think before I told him I'd go. And then I went and got all cocky and went off the ramp..." Carolina shivered, and the other girl supposed she was reliving the memory.
"Hey," Cricket said softly, turning to her friend and laying her head on her shoulder. The blonde's own head rested against hers as she continued speaking. "It wasn't your fault, okay? Going with him, yeah, and I admit I was a little upset about that...And you always were pretty cocky when it came to things. It's just who you are, Carebear."
Carolina didn't speak for a while. "Still..."
Surprising both herself and the other girl, Cricket leaned up and pressed her lips to Carolina's cheek. "Stop, okay? I'm not mad anymore."
Carolina had turned pink, and her pulse monitor seemed to beep just a little faster. "Okay..."
Then they fell back into silence, their eyes on the screen in front of them, curled up to each other just as they'd been only several nights before.
